You can get more security updates than with Service Pack 1. Also, its a free download, so you need not worry about its merits.

Service packs usually fix vulnerabilities within an OS as well as update the way it interacts with your hardware. This usually means a more secure computer and possibly a faster one. Its generally a good idea to install the latest service pack a few weeks after it has been released so that any bugs in the service pack itself will be fixed and updated before you even download it. Since you seem to be concerned about downloading Service Pack 2, I would say its a good idea to install it now, especially since Microsoft no longer offers support for Service Pack 1.

To give the advantages of SP2 for Windows XP in a nutshell, it is all about patching up security flaws that left users vulnerable due to the haste of getting XP to the market by Windows (obviously they are trying to not make the same error again by delaying Vista so many times). With SP2, one of the features I like the most is the built in "security center" with Firewall, quick access to antivirus, and a run down of your system status. This way, those people who dont buy an optional firewall can have atleast some protection. However, many users have complained that the firewall often conflicts with existing firewalls you may have in your system so do a system back up before you install it.
Otherwise, adding SP2 to your system will provide little noticeable changes other than the fact that Windows Loading Bar (when you turn on your computer) is now Blue rather than green. =)

It appears Microsoft will never get it right. Service Pack 2 is a fix. I bit the bullet and downloaded it a few years ago. So now I'm operating with Windows XP with SP2. Seems to work OK for the most part, so I guess I did the right thing by downloading it.

Myself if I had the "choice" to install SP2 or not I wouldn't have...but you see Microsoft is now Forcing SP2 down your throut or you won't get "any" Critical Updates at all from now one because they've stopped support for SP1...Just install it and hope that it doesn't destroy any of the programs you have on your computer now...I got lucky with my installation and all my programs worked after the installation of it. Thank God most of the software vendors out there have made SP2 compatible with their software. (Wasn't that way to begin with and why I waited 2 years before installing it)
