Your mum probably has better fashion sense than you. These things are hideous. It's so 1987. People come back from European holidays with them and I cringe for them sooo much. Do it if you want but don't expect the boys to be impressed.

It's just hair and you are 17. If you were my daughter and it was what you wanted I would let you but you would have to pay for it because I'm thinking it's not that cheap to get it done. You are still the same person regardless of the hairstyle you choose. And being a teenager is all about trying new things w/style. Good luck :)

I don't know why some moms get so upset about hairstyles. Even it it was your own hair. Hair grows back. It is the easiest lesson you can teach your child. I allowed my two daughters to do whatever they wanted with their hair and when they got a little outlandish, they paid the consequences with negative comments from their classmates. They found out that people will assume things about you just because of the way you look. They didn't like it and didn't do it again.

did you ask her why she doesn't want you to have the dreadlocks. is there an important event coming up? why are you wanting dreadlocks? alot of parents think of them as usually not getting taken care of and being dirty...
me personally, i can think of worse things a person would want to do. it is only hair and it is a form of expression, just an accessory that can be changed back....not anything permanent..

Well keep in mind that dreadlocks are very unhygienic and full of germs, gives problem with washing that's why the problem is.
Yes your mother is right here. There so many hairstyles you can try.

Well, maybe she just doesn't like dreadlocks. You can get dreadlocks once you live in a dorm at college, I suppose.

your mom probably thinks people won't take you serious. Are you considering college or a getting a job you are almost 18 and should be getting ready to take care of yourself. Even if you don't want to admit it your mom is right, people won't take you serious and you will be pigeonholed into a stereotype no matter how responsible you are!! Think about where you are trying to go in life.

You are 17 not 12. I think by this time she should let you choose your own hairstyle.
