What would the best pair of birds be for a beginner? I was thinking cockatiels (sp) or lovebirds. Am I on the right track?

Start with one , get it young and make friends. It will then train you.

I think you're on the right track, starting small is always a better idea than getting yourself into something too deep. I like cockatiels, they're not my favorite only cause I've met some REALLY nice ones, and I've met some REALLY mean ones. Rather lovebirds, and budgies I've never met one that was mean. I personally started out with one lovebird, who is a total sweetie, then I ended up getting him a friend, and they ended up hating eachother so they're seperately caged, which I would recommend anyway not only because then they won't mate or have the urge to mate and become territorial, and also they will bond to you and not to eachother! Lots of birds fall into this category, even if both birds are the same sex, they can bond to eachother, and then you will prety much become non existent.

One thing to keep in mind is that getting birds doesn't mean you just throw some seeds in a cage and call it good. They need to be put on some good pellets, like Zupreem, and they need fresh fruit and veggies everyday, along with their water changed at least once a day. Also some birds will outlive a dog or a cat 3 fold, so you need to keep that in mind also! Birds bond more closely with their owners that some cats and dogs, so when you rehome them if you get tired of them or whatever, they can become extremely depressed and sometimes die, or become very stressed and pluck all their feathers out. Just something to think about...I now have 2 lovebirds, and a Sun Conure, and I love them all dearly, you will just love having birds, they're very fun pets!!

Bird are great in pairs if they are male and female. Yes, you might have to deal with babies sometime down the road. If you want a bird as a buddy, you will only need 1 bird.

Lovebirds are great by theirselves. You don't need a pair. Cockatiels are also great in pairs. But they are also are great by theirselves.

Do some research before you buy any bird. It will save you trouble down the road.

Good luck!

Parakeets / Budgies

Parakeets make very good pets as long as they have a lot of attention and love. These birds are very social by nature. Living in groups of 20 to 40 and sometimes as many as 60 birds in the wild, and don’t like to be left alone. So if you own only one bird and you work 8 hour days, think about possibly getting him a mate or finding someone to at least keep the bird company for part of the time that you are gone. Parakeets make just as good of pets singly or in pairs or more, but make sure that you introduce one bird at a time. Parakeets are monogamous so once they find a mate it is usually for life unless of course one of them has an untimely death in which the other would then find a new mate. Parakeets are very good flyers. In the wild they fly back and forth across vast regions searching for food and water, so provide them with free flying time and you will have a much happier birds.

The parakeet is one of America’s most popular pet birds. Their small size, bright colors, and cheerful disposition make them perfect pets. Parakeets come in a large variety of colors including pastel blues, yellows, dark greens, violets, solid whites and almost limitless combinations of the same.

Young parakeets can easily be trained to sit on your finger. It is calming to listen to their quiet chattering and chirping. Some parakeets even learn to talk! They are playful and inquisitive, wanting to know what makes a bell ring and “what is behind that toy.” Parakeets normally live seven to twelve years, with some living much longer.

Personally I would go with the cockatiels. Lovebirds need to be handled often to stay tame and they're one of the most aggressive parrot species out there. The name 'lovebird' is misleading. The good thing about love birds is that they love to crawl into your shirt and they're well known for shredding paper and sticking them in their butt feathers. Cockatiels are less likely to bite (and hang on) and overall they're very sweet birds. Females are more cuddly and males, although they're more likely to learn how to talk and whistle, are more standoffish. They like to complain but rarely bite HARD. In most cases they just like to strut and look tough ^.^

Budgies are often overlooked as pets. If you can find a breeder who hand feeds their chicks, I'd certainly nab one if you can find one. Hand fed budgies are supposed to be one of the best pet parrots available! They're very brash and playful birds that are always on the go. In comparison cockatiels are flighty and easily spooked. I find an angry budgie can bite harder than a ticked cockatiel, but their bites aren't as bad as lovebirds who like to hang on and grind their beak into your skin >.< .
