I am totally confused about the conflicting standards around in Australia at the moment - LCD versus plasma, codecs that prevent the viewing of hd programs, new hd dvds..bluray, hd disks, now laser! Help! I don't know what the best, future proof purchase is. I want to be able to play HD movies created on my computer on the tv..ie use it as a monitor, as well as pick up programs without a boxtop.

I'm not familiar with the standards in Australia, but here in the US, there are a few different screen resolutions that pretty much all play together. The two things to remember are:
1. Higher numbers are better, and
2. p is better than i.

Going up in quality, they are 480i, which is normal TV (480 resolution lines, interlaced). 480p is Progressive Scan. 720p is called High Definition, even though it really isn't, and the same goes for 1080i. Your best bet is to get a TV that conforms to the 1080p standard (1080 horizontal lines of resolution, P for Progressive scan) That is true, full high definition.

If you want to connect it to a PC and use it as a monitor, I'd say a rear projection TV would be your best bet. Sometimes, individual LCD monitor pixels can go dead, leaving a barely noticable black dot on the screen. Also, plasma screens suffer from image burn-in when the picture doesn't change for long periods (like on a computer screen..!)

Also, make sure it has both DVI (for you computer) and HDMI (for your TV ) inputs so you can easily switch back and forth. Hope this helps you out.
