I've seen people at baseball games and other sporting events praying to God for so and so to hit a home run etc. Does God take sides? Doesn't He have more important things to do than have Carlos Beltran get a bases-loaded hit?

If there is a god, I am sure he ahs better things to take care of rather than play "bookie" and say " screw the Mets" Go Cardinals!

But, prayers are just a way of asking for help on a matter that is out of your hands. Prayers gives people hope, and I guess that is good...unless you are a Met fan.

Because religion brainwashes people to pray. It makes no difference. Anyone watching a sporting event can assume that half are rooting/praying for one side and the rest for the other team. Those who pray don't have better health than non-prayers, they don't win the state lottery more often, don't get better jobs, etc, etc. It makes no difference. Religions will talk about the power of prayer but they never talk about prayer failure. Remember the 2004 Tsunami that struck Indonesia? The people there are mostly Muslim who pray 5 times a day and hundreds of thousands were killed. It made no difference whether you were a non-prayer or prayed 105 times a day. It doesn't change at thing. Good and bad things happen to prayers and non-prayers alike.

why now? people pray they win the lottery, pray they did well on a test, pray that the ringing phone has the person they're crushing on at the other end... when you want something and are forced to sit and watch the outcome unfold- in other words can't actually do anything about it, you try to add your influence by requesting divine intervention- it adds to the excitement... how many times have you seen someone close their eyes before pulling on a slot machine- they're praying...

God has time for everyone and everything. Everything that we pray about is important to him. No God doesn't take sides. We are all equal in his eyes. He loves all his children.

Because a lot of sports fans are totally insane. They've lost touch with reality and they like it.

that is their religion! People in the US value sports, hollywood movies, tv programs, things far more than they value themselves and others...sad but true. Any one care to bring back love, kindness and respect for others?

And God would support the Cardinals anyway (And I always though he was a big Padres fan)

As stupid as it is, there are actually worse things to pray for. Ever read Mark Twain's "War Prayer"?

I'm sure that's not an effective use of prayer; rather they should pray that there are no serious injuries.

Because sports is the opiate of the masses.
