I'm not one for buying expensive equipment just to monitor use. Of course if you'd like to buy it, it's a great source. If you would like to monitor basic internet keep the computer in a room where family is constantly going in and out of it--family room, dining room, or kitchen. This way it will be easy to tell if he/she is trying to hide something. To monitor IM use there is a setting on most messenger programs that allow you to save every conversation. Keep them saved--and if you grow suspicious of fowl play go look threw her IMs. Don't get to in depth--if she's talking to people s/he knows then it's not worth worrying about. As for basic internet use always check the "History" for the computer. You can do this by looking under the icon "History" on the computer. You can tell if s/he is deleting history if you monitor the times s/he is on the computer and check which sites s/he had been on during the day. I feel that if parents are honest with their kids and let them know about the privileges, and dangers of the internet kids will be more likely to be trustworthy--but that doesn't keep other predators out--so with trust and monitoring--everything can be "okay." I included a website with a short splub about internet use with teens. Best of Luck!

My kids are big now, but I think if they weren't I'd buy them a computer and let them use it without Internet service. I would have Internet service somewhere in a main area of the house, so if they needed to do homework and use it they could.
With what's out there on IM and in e.mail and whatever else, I don't think kids should have access to it. If its a teenager I'd give them a cell phone before giving them carte blanche with the Internet, and then their friends could text them for a dime or whatever it costs. It may sound drastic, but I don't think kids should be on the Internet as much as they are and don't think they need it for anything but homework.
If every parent did this there would be no more of this business with predators and whoever else on IM. I can see how kids enjoy talking to all their pals, and maybe it doesn't seem like a bad thing rather than having them out and away from the house; but in the long run, I think they'd be better off if they had to find other things to get their mind on while at home.

There are many ways to do this. You can install a program on the computer that records all key strokes so you can see exactly what it being typed, but not what is received from others.
A better way may be to just ask to see their email if you are concerned about activities, or just stick your head in the door when they are on the computer. Your child needs to understand the using a computer is a privelege... NOT a right.

Get a program that tracks your child's every move on the internet and sends you a report. For example check out this web site
http://www.awarenesstech.com/parents/
I also have a rule that my children cannot have anything on the internet with a password that I don't know. I don't check their mail, but they always know that I have the option to anytime I want to which keeps them more honest.

Well, our computer is in the living room. I have my son's password, do not allow IM or myspace, etc. He knows if he is not truthful, everything will get cut off. Really depends upon the age of your child.
