It seems like there are so many good Linux options - and Windows is going heavily into copy protection - I think the party is over.

whatever happens with windows. When it goes out. It will not be sudden. It will be over probably the period of a few years. And the drop will not kill it, just reduce its dominance.

I have heard great things about Linux, never used it though. There is less customer satisfaction among Windows users.

I'd switch to a mac based O.S. if apple had the balls to put one out for PC's. But sadly they are afraid of going head to head with microsoft.
