I've done this in two different homes, and I receive compliments on it all the time.
One rule of thumb--unity. Some will recommend that you use frames in one color, like black or brass. However, I chose to put up pictures all in sepia tones, and then I bought frames of all different sorts that look old. Pick something to tie all of the photos together into a theme.
I display our photos (which range from my children going back five generations to photos taken in the 1860s) in a random grouping, anchored at the top with an antique mirror from my husband's grandmother, and at the bottom with a framed doily that I made. It might be fun to anchor yours with a nice quality family tree. (I chose not to use any original photos on my wall--all are digital copies, so that I could size them specific to a frame, and trim them, say, into oval shapes--without damaging originals.)
Whether you choose to go with a unified frame style or an eclectic look, WalMart and Big Lots are gold mines for frames on the cheap. I found some of my frames for as little as $2, but I didn't spend more than $7 on any single frame. Just be patient as you shop--it will take several trips to find all that you need.
And one final note--your arrangement will attract a lot of attention, especially from family. Be sure to write names and dates on the back of each print so that in the future, you can identify the faces and the time period of each photo.
Have fun with your display.

A bunch of family pictures looks nice on the stairway, but if you want to make it look classier, I might suggest getting the family pictures in black and white or sepia. Then, use different styles of black frames for black and white. Or you could use brown frames for sepia prints. You can get those small shelves from pottery barn or other decorating stores to set some of the pictures on. If you do not want all of the pictures to be flush against the wall.
You can hang almost block shelves of white, black, or any painted color on the wall and put either votives or silver candles sticks with dinner candles on them going up the stair case. Candles are always nice and classic looking.

No its not tacky at all, you can make a nice arrangement including smaller pictures, maybe two underneath each other between 2 larger ones. This way it adds some punch and doesn't make it boring, they should hang the same way the stairs go up. Make sure you measure well, if you got the laser measure it makes it easier. Don't make it too much symmetrical, that can look boring and totally out of date.
You can buy the laser measure at the Home Depot.

No,picture frames are not tacky, try doing family pictures or pictures with friends, but the picture frames dont have to be the same exact type but should be along the same theme and try to do the color of the frame match the color of the wallpaper/pain of the hall.

Hanging family photos is a lovely idea. Definitely not tacky if done tastefully.
Additional ideas:
- matting for photos that need a boost
- matting to add touches of color
- action series frames
- shadow picture frames
Interspersing to accent photos
- shallow shadow boxes
- hangable sentimental items
- natural or well made artifical items (wreath, swag, etc)
- decorative pictures or paintings
I'm sure your family would appreciate and enjoy it!

I have a great suggestion as we did this recently. Go to www.allposters.com or a similar site and buy 3 or 4 large posters such as vintage travel posters or national park posters or French travel posters --- there are lots to choose from. The are inexpensive, too. Then buy off the shelf frames from the craft store. The look great going up the staircase. Really great!

No that's not tacky, as long as it is done tastefully. I think it is a great space to put up family photos. If you have a stairway that is enclosed on both sides, you could pick one side for photos from your husbands family and the other for photos from your side of the family.

Family pics are nice & a good way to show off your family. You can also use a nice quilted wall hanging to match your other decor. They are homey & fairly easy to care for. If you don't sew visit your local quilt store or craft store for ideas.

Not tacky... try to use frames of "the same type" in color..... so it brings some symmetry to the 'look'.....
