I adopted a three year old half yorkie, half maltese that will not eat anything except table scraps. I got her about 5 days ago and she has had no shots. Is it safe to give her table scraps, and if not how can I get her to eat dog food? Please help?

she's so used to eating human food. GIve her dog food, nothing else, then when she gets hungry, she'll have no choice but to eat it anyways.

Don't give her table scraps! She'll only become overweight, impolite, and disobedient. Look, if a dog is hungry enough, they will eat dog food. This dog has probably been fed table scraps for a long time, so she's not used to dog food. But dog food has better nutrition that's made for a dog. What kind of food are you feeding her? I'd recommend something like Iams, Nutro Max, Royal Canin/ Waltham, Hill's Science Diet, or something along those brands.
Yes, and get her vaccinated. If you adopted the dog from a shelter, she should be vaccinated, but you should also have some sort of vaccination record. You'll need something in order to get her vaccinated. You could take her to a low-cost vaccination clinic, such as ones that are typically at pet stores on Saturday mornings.

You have about 3 options:
1.Do this for a few days, feed her table scraps such as gravy or mashed potatoes with a little bit of dog food mixed in. Gradually put in less and less table scraps and more and dog food each day until you are down to almost no table scraps.
2.Try feeding her canned dog food. For some reason they seam to like the cheapest kind the best.
3.Call the vet. Your dog could have a (bug) or a worm of some type making her sick. Never hurts to be for sure. Also your vet may advise you of another method to make your dog eat dry food.

if you're going to feed your dog food from the table, you better do some serious research, as many human foods can cause problems for dogs. the safest bet is a high-quality dog food. as long as the dog is getting table scraps though, she will hold out for more rather than eat her dog food. 5 days isn't that long. stop feeding her your food, and leave the dog food in a visible location. when she gets hungry enough, she will eat. she won't starve.

The first thing that you need to do is take her to the vet and get her up-to-date on her shots. While you're there, ask the vet if he or she can recommend a method of getting her to eat dog food. It could be that you're giving her a food she's unaccustomed to, and that's why she is refusing to eat it. Don't continue to feed her table scraps, though. It's not good for her, and it'll encourage her to not eat her dog food. If she still refuses to eat her dog food after being cut off of the table scraps, you can try drizzling a bit of gravy on the top of it, or mixing in a couple of pieces of meat with it. Also, if you're feeding her dry food, you might try putting a little canned food in with it.

Give her dog food with a bit of meat baby food mixed in. Gradually reduce the amount of baby food until she is just on dog food. Table scraps are unhealthy for dogs, but meat baby food (such as beef or veal) is just pureed meat and water. Also be sure to get her vaccinated and start her on heart worm prevention if you live in an area with heartworms (Almost the entire US). I would also take her into your vet for a check up, test for parasites, etc.

First keep table scraps to a bare minimum, they are not good for a dog. Ask the people who had the dog before what they fed him. Second why hasn't he had shots? Take him for his shots and have the Vet check him over.

table scraps are not the best food for any animal, but the best way to get her to eat dog food is to mix a little with the scraps and let her think that it has come off of your plate.i give my elderly jack russels. his medication in a little bit of corned beef, he thinks hes getting a treat because he sees me getting it out of the fridge and thats where peoples food is.

well, try out different types of dry dog food to see which she likes best. (and which won't give her smelly farts). I ended up with beneful (no farts), but that was after 3 different types. One type made her sick. My dog (golden retriever x black lab x german shep) loves when I mix canned food with her dry too, which I do on occasion (watch out for tartar build up on teeth with canned, so limit it) She gets scraps on occasion. Some human food does not agree with her, even though she greedily gobbles it up, and we all pay the price having to smell her stinky farts. (they get so bad, it seems as if you can taste them, yuk!) Anyway good luck. Get her de-wormed too. You never know.

To wean her away, mix half dog food with table scraps for a few days, lessening teh amount of table scraps and increasing the amount of dog food until its all dog food.

I would try a dogfood product called made by Merrick-it is sold in both dry and can formula-"Grammy's Pot Pie", it is all human grade food formulated for dogs (mine loves it), you can purchase it more so at the smaller pet supply store. Good Luck.
