I give them fresh food everyday. They like to eat small amounts at a time, so keep the bowl full.

Cockatiel seed and water should be available to the bird all the time. Regularly check that the water is clean. Ask yourself if you would drink it, if the answer is no then change it.

The bird also needs some variety to provide all the nutrients it requires and this should be given as well as the seed. For example, they love millet sprays which are high in protein and vitamin B. Greenfoods like chickweed, spinach, lettuce etc. gives them vitamin A which is usually deficient in seed. Mine likes to nibble on cauliflower greens and carrot. They like some fruits like apple or grapes.

Over the years we have found our bird likes a nibble of baked beans (without the sauce), sweetcorn, boiled potato and cooked rice.

A cuttlefish bone provides calcium and most pet shops sell iodine blocks that clip on the cage. These provide the iodine needed for the thyroid gland which influence the bird's metabolism and overall level of activity. (Seed is often low in this).

Providing the greens and nibbles also gives the bird "recreational eating" which helps prevent it getting bored and starting to pluck it's feathers etc.

My cockatiel is now 20 years old :-)

If it is a standard size cockatiel food bowl, fill it about an inch and a half (so they can reach to the bottom so no food is wasted) Do this once a day.
Water as well as the bowl it's in should be clean at all times.

A healthy cockatiel should weigh about 4 ozs.

I feed my guys once a day but I have several bowls out for them all the time. I may change the water once or twice a day depending on how often they poop in it **rolls eyes**. I swear they wait for me to put a fresh bowl in before poop target practice!

Throughout the day I'll gently blow out the seed hulls from the main food bowls. At the end of the day I'll empty all the food bowls and either give the left overs to my rats or I'll blow them out more thoroughly. Depends on how they've eaten. Fresh veggies get replaced after a few hours. Seeds and pellets get left in the bowls all day.

I feed mine once per day. I throw out the old food and water and give fresh food daily. My brids to not eat seed. I make a combo of vegetables, apples, rice, and the combo beans (used for soup). This has been the regular diet for the past 10 years. I make a batch of this combo and it lasts about 3 months. I separate into little baggies.

If you feed them in small amounts several times a day, they tend to be friendlier because they have to depend on you more. I always just watch and feed mine when his food gets low. He usually spends a lot of time keeping me informed on how low the supply is. You don't have to worry they will let you know if they get hungry. Also finch food is a real treat.

Your bird should have fresh food and water every day. You should also be giving him fruits and veggies. What is good for you is good for your bird. A birds main diet in the wild is not seed. Give it a variety of food.
