Yeah I get what you mean. Why would they put harmful chemicals in a drink...if used prolonged it can cause slurring and retardation. What gives? Can't they make it without it? I wish that they can make a healthier alternative :-)

Also, while it is not the healthiest ingredient to consume, Phenylalanine is in such small amounts in diet pop, that to most people it is harmless, unless you're drinking loads of diet pop on a daily basis. It has been shown to cause urinary tract infections and other problems, but overall, pop isn't really that great of a beverage to be drinking in the first place.
Artificial sweetners are always under debate as to wether it is ok to consume or not. Splenda touts that it is so safe, even children can consume it. But that product has gone under speculation, too. Overall, diabetics and other sugar intolerant folks need some kind of sweetner, and for now, this is apparently the best the FDA can come up with. There is an all natural sweetner that does not raise sugar blood levels, called Stevia, but it is not widely available, has a horrible aftertaste, and is costly.
When it comes to choosing artificial sweetners, it seems that the options aren't so sweet.

If you knew the half you would go crazy. Farm raised salmon has cancer causing agents in it, cows are fed cement powder so that they are heavier for when they are sold, and chickens are pump up so much with growth hormones that they grow from an egg to a full grown bird in 21 days, and that is just the tip of the ice burg. Do a little research on the mandatory shot that children must get in order to go to school. Here is a few and their ingredients.

Phenylalanine does NOT cause death. It can aggravate mental retardation in susceptible individuals, called phenylketonurics. Phenylalanine is a naturally occuring amino acid. It is in all kinds of things, not just diet soda.

Phenylalanine does not cause death in general. It is poorly processed by phenylketonurics, and causes problem in that particular population. Artifical sweeteners, however, ar enot god for the body.
