I have a friend that isn't going to be going on a mission, and they don't think it is important. Don't you get blessings for these kind of things?

If he doesn't think it is important how good of missionary would he make even if he went on a mission. You have to have the desire to go how a mission and not be forced to go.

I like Isolde's answer. Yes, you do get blessings for going on a mission. Mainly you get to learn just how and why principles of the Gospel work. People have to be spiritually and emotionally and socially and financially prepared to serve a mission. I realize it is not right for everyone. The important thing is to study it out and pray about it, and if the desire is there, to act on the desire. Sometimes people don't want to go because they don't want to give up a good job or a comfortable lifestyle just getting by, but I think you learn more in 18 months (for the girls ) or 24 months (for the guys) than you do in an entire 3 or 4 years at college, because you have the opportunity to grow and develop leadership skills along with making eternal friends. Sometimes you even get to learn a language that is helpful later on in life. For example, I still use my Spanish off and on for all kinds of things.

Yes, but you have to be called. Not just by the Church, but by the Holy Ghost. If some one doesn't have the desire, and the calling, it's better not to go. Did your friend pray about it? Maybe he got a negative answer.

If he is meant to go on a mission, he will. We once had a formerly apostate rock n roll playing missionary. He used to yell at missionaries on the street. He heard an audible voice tell him to go on a mission. He lost the power to play the guitar, until he went back to church and got his act together.

I know some people that went on a LSD mission and never really came back. Of course that was a long time ago.

It just that I detest having them accost me on the street and call my faith wrong. If they can tolerate the amount of abuse that will be heaped upon them, they will be blessed
