People look at sin from our concept of the word, so, it hard to understand that Stealing, Sexual Perversions, Killing etc. can be the same when we look at sin. We feel from a world point of view each has a different level of being wrong. Like Stealing is not as bad as Killing.
God tells us in the Bible that the result of sin is Death. So, the penalty of sin is Death, stealing or killing. So, people say "sin is sin" because, all sin carries the same penalty; Death. There are no slaps on the hand sins.
Hope you see what I try to say.

Are there varying degrees of sin? Is it worse to commit adultery than steal? Or to murder than lie? Or to commit idolatry than break the Sabbath? Does God make distinctions between different types of sin?
Romans 6:23 tells us plainly that "the wages of sin is death." Does this mean all sins are equal? under the law is a gossip equal to a mass murderer? Is a petty thief just as sinful as a child molester?
Although all sin merits the death penalty and requires the blood of Christ for expiation, God's Word reveals that some sins are indeed worse than others. Some sins have greater consequences to the sinner, as well as to those his sin affects. From the judgments God makes regarding certain sins, we will see that some sins bring stiffer penalties and greater condemnation.

This is only True to a certain extent. This is only true when referring to the wages of sin which is death. It doesn't address the degree of sin meaning certain sins are worse than others and lead to eternal death when practiced. Galatians 6

It has none. Jesus is crucified for the human sins.
We will not have any sins at all for the rest of our life coz Jesus has taken all sins from all of us.
So we can commit any sins that we want and no need to worry about it. That's why we have homosexuality, free sex and George Bush killing people everywhere.
Once again, no need to worry about sins coz Jesus has lifted the burden for us.

It doesn't say that sin is sin to the best of my knowledge. What it does say is that we are all sinners and we sin everyday. If your talking about the degree of sinning such as murder compared to lust, you will answer to God for all your sins even if you have been forgiven them through Christ.

The Ten Commandments in the Old Testament and new commandment which Jesus brought saying treat others the way you would want them to treat you.

Look up James 2:10, it says that if we have committed one sin we have committed them all.

...Have you sinned only one time? All of us are guilty of sin, and it takes only one - observe James 2:10, which says,
..."For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all."
..."For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
...I pray that all readers will believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and be saved.
