For survival: to eat. The spider will spin the web and then wait for some unsuspecting fly to get caught in it. The fly can't see the web as it is zipping in the air. Then, once the fly is stuck the spider wraps it up and eats. Bon apetit!

They spin the webs to trap other bugs. When a bug is trapped in the web, the spider goes and wraps it up in more webbing like a mummy. Then it bites its prey, injecting special enzymes into the trapped bug, which literally liquefies its insides. Then the spider sucks out the liquid for both food and water.

Yep, as a food source. I once saw a spider make a web outside my kitchen window, right below a wasp nest. Well I don't like bees, so I would bang on the window pane and always one wasp would fall into the web. It was very fascinating to watch the spider attack a live wasp!
