You're right that the dog should not have been on your property, and the owner probably knows it. But you used a weapon against the animal. Were you under attack? Was the dog damaging your property? Have you asked the neighbor (asked, not told) to please keep his dog off your property?
There's probably a bit of blame to go all around, but I am sorry to say that you made a bad choice. The very best thing you can do now is admit that you made a bad decision, and now that you've had some time to think it over, you would handle it differently if it happens again.
It's the right and mature thing to do, and you will be taken far more seriously in the long run if you can bring yourself to do the right thing.
Good Luck...
PS... get rid of the paintball gun. They cause more damage than they're worth

Dog may have been on your property but that does not give you the right to resort to animal cruelty. So if your kids were on your neighbors property does that mean he can shoot at them? If you are having a problem with your neighbors dog call animal control, speak with your neighbor but don't ever EVER resort to any type of violent act against a dog unless this dog was attacking your child or another dog and then if I were you I would have taken a hose and sprayed water at it.

actually I had a simular ordeal. Call the humaine society to come put a live animal trap on your property. Do not let them know that you know who's dog it is. When they put the trap out if tey try to let the dog out of the trap they will be fine a $500.00 fine for tampering with government property. Also once they get the animal the owners will have to pay a $50 fine and go over the leash law. If the animal is caught running stray again, they not only charge them, they keep the animal test it and adopt it out to other people. Good Luck!!!

Hello Hannah, Hannah it is not the dogs fault for roaming into your yard; it is the owners fault. And if you felt angry or mad that the dog was in your yard then you need to speak to the dog's owner. I am sorry Hannah, but what you did was immature. Put yourself in your neighbors shoes. What if the situation was reversed. You let your dog out with out any restraints to keep him in your yard and he wanders into other peoples yards and then you see him at the back door with a lot of orange paint on him. 1st thing you are going to say is "What the heck happened?" And be concerned for the dogs well being. What you did had a part to play in Animal Cruelty. You are both at fault Hannah. Your neighbor for not restraining the dog to his own yard and you are at fault for acting immaturely on the matter. Trust me,,,,,,, next time just tell or inform the neighbor that his-her dog is in your yard and if they could please come and remove him.

Well I am sure the dog was intentionally trespassing on your property. You clearly have issues if you think it is okay to hurt an animal in any way. Maybe if your neighbors toddler roams into your yard you should pop a cap...you will get what you deserve. Karma is a b**** and by b**** I am referring to the dog.

Did you tell the neighbor the next time his dog is in your yard, you will shoot the dog with a paintball gun?
If you told him that and he allowed his dog out and he went into your yard, then you have the right to shoot him with the paintball gun.
If you didn't, then you might be in trouble.

Just reiterating what's already been said by others. In the future, don't punish the dog because the owner is being irresponsible. Talk to the owner and if the owner's an asshole and the problem persists, then call the authorities.
