This is commonly called a blackout. It is a period of alcohol-induced amnesia which may last for a few minutes or maybe for days. Blackouts are one of the criteria for diagnosing alcoholism. Only alcoholics have blackouts. Normal people do not have blackouts.

Ok well apparently I must be an alcoholic if only alcoholics black out. I don't do it every time but it has definitely happened. Sometimes it depends on what I drink, how much I drink, if I eat, if I'm on any medication, what time of the month it is etc. It's definitely not a good thing and it kills brain cells. The only time it's ever a good thing is if you did something you don't want to remember. But even then you are sure to have people that are more than happy to fill you in on all the gory details!!

Because "anterograde amnesia" sets in. It is a form of amnesia, or memory loss, where new events are not transferred to long-term memory. After the onset of the disorder, the sufferer will not be able to remember anything that occurs after his attention is shifted away from one subject for more than a few seconds.
Large intake of alcohol can cause anterograde amnesia commonly referred to as black outs. This is likely caused by alcohol's affect on GABA receptors, which play a role in memory formation in the hippocampus. Because of the other symptoms of intoxication, it is usually not evident to observers when an intoxicated person is suffering from amnesia, and they themselves will only become aware of it later if they identify a period of missing time.

Cause alot of people that are drunk end up going into a deep sleep that clears their mind and once they wake up the next day, there they are wondering what happend last night. The only reason that you remember everything that happends is that you have a strong system that liquor does not affect you.

It depends on how much alcohol was consumed vs the person's body mass. Alcohol does affect the brain in different ways for different people.
