There are various methods of dressing a wound depending on the type of wound and its extensiveness, and the method of dressings would vary according to a setting and availability of wound dressings materials needed. The best practical way of wound dressing as first aid follows the traditional way of dressings described as follows:
The most important thing to consider is keeping the wound and everything in contact to it clean (sterile if possible). Before any kind of wound dressing is applied, the wound should be appropriately prepared to enhance both the effectiveness of the dressing and the self-healing ability of the wound. To achieve optimal healing, wounds must not be infected, they should contain as much vascularized wound bed as possible, and they should be free of exudate.
For a fresh 'clean' wound, cleaning it with an antiseptic such as povidone iodine (betadine) would be enough. Clean the wound with a sterile cotton ball or bandage gauze soaked with betadine. (Can be with the use of a forcep or a thoroughly handwashed hand). Do it in circular motion starting from the inner part going through the outer part of the wound doing it for at least 3-5 times. For a 'soiled wound' it may require to wash it with clean water or saline and soap before disinfecting with the betadine. Make sure that the area surounding the wound is well cleaned too. Some topical antibiotics maybe applied as the case requires. Then an occlusive bandage dressings or a bandaid applied and taped if it is supposed to be closed dressings, otherwise it can be just left open. Always be sure that wound bleeding is aborted on top of the priorities.
For subsequent wound dressings, hydrogen peroxide use is usually needed before disinfecting it with betadine. Cleaning first with hydrogen peroxide- soaked cotton balls or bandage gauge applies the same circular motion from inner to outer part of the wound 3-5 times, followed with painting with betadine and the following same steps previously described.♥
I am describing wound dressings in wounds not in extremes that requires more medical management. I am quite not sure if this is what you are asking for but anyway find useful informations on the following links:

if you have a wound you will have inlammation no matter what! one of the 4 symptoms learned in classes such as Anatomy. if the wound is closed, wash it with some peroxide to kill the germs anyway, get an antibiotic ointment and spred it onto the wound, then put a bandage to cover the wound. after a couple of days take off the bandage and let it breathe so that it heals on its own!
the deeper wound requires you to clean it really good with things such Bioctine or Bactine-am not sure how exactly it is called-then put some antibiotic ointment on it-spread it thick so that the wound will not get infected-and then put a bandage on. keep on switching the bandage every few hours, and after a couple of days take the bandage off so that the wound can breathe-when it has the hard crust formed on it! do not pick the crust formed and let everything heal by itself not forgetting to put some more ointment on after you wash up with Bactine1

depends on the wound. clean it first with a fiberless cloth (cotton) and hydrogen proxide.
abrasion: (tearing of first layer of skin) put a piece of gauze over it slightly askew and tape it with bandaging tape. leave it a bit askewed and not cover the wound completely so that it can breath and heal.
puncture: wash but go get emergency help since you aren't aware of how deep it is.
lacerating: uneven jagged tearing of skin (glass) skin may not be the only thing torn so seek emergency help as well. do not try to take out the object if it's still stuck in there.
cuts: clean and hold under cold water. it's a clotting agent. apply pressure on the wound if it doesn't work if that doesn't work also raise it above your heart.'
also in response to what folken said never ever try to use a tourniquet. it cuts off blood completely to that area of the body and thus it is dangerous if you don't know how to put it on or do it wrong. besides that tourniquets are the last thing you turn to as a first aider since it's use in dire situations in which someone will die in a matter of seconds if the bleeding doesn't stop. tourniquets are only suppose to be taken off by doctors since they know how.

depends on the wound... clean it, then...
abrasions are easily dealt with, with a 4x4 or applicable sized gauze pad
capillary cuts are better with a bandage or a wrap (depending on small or big)
vein (see doctor)
artery (see doctor)
amputation that doesn't lacerate a vein or artery (fingertips) work well with a medicated gauze pad you can get from the doctors
amputation that does involve arteries or veins (see doctor)
direct pressure usually stops bleeding, but sometimes pressure on the arteries in the leg socket or armpit are needed, and sometimes a tourniquet is good until you can reach medical help...

If it is a open wound flush clean with saline and leave uncovered. If it is a cut rinse with saline and cover but only while out. The longer you leave it uncovered the quicker you will develop a scab.
