Hygiene and grooming are important. Wash. Wear deoderant. Dress nice. Wear your hair in a style that suits you (not just whatever is currently the style, or whatever takes the least effort). And for God's sake brush your teeth every morning, whether you need it or not. ;)
Confidence is key. Girls aren't attracted to macho jerks (contrary to popular opinion), they're attracted to guys who are confident. It just so happens that macho jerks have loads of confidence. If you can be confident without being insensitive or overly aggressive, you're golden.
Know how to give a compliment -- preferably one that has nothing to do with a girl's sexual attributes. She's heard that she has beautiful eyes dozens of times. How many guys compliment her on her sense of style? Most girls put a lot of effort into choosing outfits, and a guy who notices and appreciates that has an unfair advantage.
Know how to talk to girls. If you can hold a conversation with a girl, she knows that you're not freaking out about the prospect of hooking up with her (also touches on the confidence thing). This part is easier if you have friends who are girls, especially if your female friends are hot (no points for not being caught up in attraction with girls who aren't attractive).
Stand out from the crowd. You can achieve this a number of ways. Be funny. Have a special skill. Be good at sports. Do charity work. Anything that paints you as other than average without making you look pathetic. It helps to be the best at something, whatever that something is.

You can try all you want but truth is if they don't dig you from the get go, they are just not into you. They all have a "type" and you can't force yourself into that mold.
In general: fresh breath, no heavy cologne, a man that has some rhythm (it means he is good in bed), hair in the right places (remove stray nose hairs ect...) well groomed, short nails AND...
intelligence
loving
tender
spiritual
funny
laid back
selfless
considerate
DO NOT make any sexual references or look at another woman in her presence! Otherwise, she'll think your a pig. Focus on her eyes not any other part of her body and pretend you're so into what she is saying. Do not let your eyes stray.
Do not spend too much or to little on her. If you spend to much you might end up attracting someone materialistic or just wasting $ and if you spend too little (like at McDonalds) you will never see her again.
Don't persistantly pursue her, she will think your a psycho.
They will probably treat you like crap anyway but eventually you get the one you want.

looks are important to everybody, but personality is also a big advantage, try your best, shes not worth it if she doesnt feel the same way

to everyone his own. this is not a "meat market" -- we are different and act different. in your case --since you asked for hints I would write down on the palm of your hand -- "hi, my name is "schmuck" -- and yours is.........." then continue in the best language you know of.

walk up to her outstrech your arm, shake her hand (not to crazy like) and say "hi, my names bla-bla-bla, nice ta meet cha" that worked on me, but with a nice smile, good smell, and make sure your hand is clean
