Alright...depends. Some subs are actually self powerd, and since you didnt give an exact model im not sure what you got. If it has someplace to plug power in, you dont need an amp. If you only need to run the audio to it, then its unpowered and you need an amp. 1000 watts means that the max that it can handle. Id go see what you can affored somewhere and ask their opinion of what they have there. As to the purpose, think of it like this, the sound system is like a river kinda. The CD player puts out alittle bit of power, so theres alittle trickle of a mountain stream moving along. Then it gets to a river eventually. Here, the stream is meet and added upon by alot of water that gives it overall alot more force, which makes the power plant make power at the end more effective. Now, speakers work by electricty moving magnets in the speakers and subs to move the cone to cause pressure differences in the surroundings that we sense as sound. The CD player doesnt put out enough power to move these alone, so the amplifier gives it a kick in a** to give itenough juice to move the speaker. Make sense? But to hook them up, if your asking if you need an amp and why, do yourself a favor and get it done for you

I do know you will need to buy an amp the sub wil not sound right if you hook directly into radio, the radio wont produce enough power to support the woofers. which is the best that im not sure or how to install but got this website, www.crutchfield.com very good website to answer question or look up amps

All i know is that you do beed amps because its their power source. Although circuit city and best buy do install, you can search around the sites in the info sections and they actually tell you want you need to do, believe me. Thats how i found out about car speakers. check it out,
