Depends on what kind of plan you have. Most plans require you
to chose a primary physician. You go to him/her first and then you are referred to a specialist. Call the 1-800 number on your card and find out the details or talk to the human resource
division where you work ( if they have one ). Don't worry, most
people are confused the first time they do this.

Most insurance now requires that you have a "family doctor" or "general practitioner" before you can have a specialist's care for something like your eyes or heart. They want someone in overall charge of your health program. Your insurance company will have a list of doctors in your county who accept their insurance. Choose one near you, call, and visit for either a physical or just a getting-to-know-you appointment to see if you're comfortable with them. (Maybe the doc could be someone a friend recommends, ask around with your buddies.) Good luck!

1. See if your insurance company has a list of preferred general practitioners (covered better in network)
2. Get recommendations from friends or co-workers
I've had to do this in a new area- ask them why they recommend them it might help you feel better about a new doctor (get multiple recommendations)
3. make an appointment with that Dr - discuss your problem
If you feel happy with that treatment or they refer you fine
if they treat you keep up with do your own progress
(you have to keep up with things and don't assume they always know best if things don't feel right.)
If you feel treatment is unsatisfactory - see another Dr. on the list.
If your problem is obvious but private (judging from your question)
my experience has been that the previous steps will get the matter resolved. Don't be afraid to ask questions!! You are buying a service and if you have insurance they will get paid for providing that service- Set your expectations accordingly.
Remember to be firm - but be nice- Dr's are people too!

Not sure what country you are in but most places require you to see a medical doctor who in turn may refer you to a specialist. If you do not have a doctor go to an out patient clinic, they are usually open 24 hours, and ask to speak to a doctor, you may get to see him immediately or you may get an appointment to see him in the near future

Check the back of your insurance card for member services. They can help. Most insurances even have websites.. you can start there.
