It isn't necessary for the medal to be blessed but it may hold more significance for your husband if you (as a non-Catholic) took the trouble to have it blessed. It's a lovely gesture and I'm sure it will please your husband. You don't need to take it to Church but just ask the priest if he will bless it for you. Ring and make an appointment with him.

I always had St. Christopher Medals blessed..I'm not Catholic and neither were the receipiants..but it was just an extra act of love for the person I gave it to.

How thoughtful of you. Since it is for your husband, you should have a feel about if he would really appreciate you going through the trouble to do that for him or not. Otherwise, there would be no problem in giving him one that wasn't blessed.
