I have a year old American Eskimo. He's frisky and playful, but sometimes muc htoo wild and like to rough-house. I'm thinking of adopting a mellow 1-3 year old cat to keep me company when i don't feel like wrestling with the dog... XD

Is this a good idea...? I'm not sure if the two will get along, but as a puppy, my dog grew up with a cat at his previous owner's house. He hasn't seen one since.
I am a full time student and am not home almost 9 hours a day.... That's not good for a cat huh? Can they be left alone for long periods of time? I always thought that cats were independant and such... Opinions/ advice?

It's nice to know that you're thinking about going to adopt an older cat instead of a little kitten.
Considering he hasn't seen a cat in the house for a while, it might be a bit of a problem.
Also, if he is very playful and frisky, he might injure the cat if he is left alone with him/her for such a long period of time.
Cats can be independant now.
See if the dog and cat get along with each other before putting them in the same room(s) as each other.

Keep a litter box where your cat can get to it and your dog cant! Dogs will eat it lol keep a dish of food and water where you cat can get to it also again not the dog. Cats are very independent, Scratching post or cat trees are a good idea, They love to get in ones where they can hide and are up high off the ground.
About them getting along is hard to say. I have six cats and have had a dog with with the first two and they did fine. Later i got another dog when mine passed away but at that time I Had 6 cats. Not all got along with the dog. But I had no problem with them fighting. She just hissed and hid lol Best of luck

I think it could work fine, provided you give your new kitty a lot of escape options and hidey holes. We've had dogs and cats together many times. They often get along better than multiple cats do with each other.

Cats are usually solitairy anyhow, it would probably sleep the entire nine hours you were gone and not even notice. My friend just found a stray calico she tried giving me, I had to say no because I already have one but if you live in western wisconsin let me know and you can have it. It's a young calico female, very friendly.
