There is a really good application called KMyMoney (http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/index-home.html) which is very similar to Quicken, unfortunately it's only for Linux, BSD and such operating systems.
But there is also GFP Personal Finance Manager (http://gfd.sourceforge.net/)
Grisbi seems to be a nice application as well and can be found at http://www.grisbi.org/

i use microsoft excel it works really well but i dont think it is free (sorry)
