Do you think showing your children pictures of people infected with herpes is a good idea?

This guy at work says he showed his kids pictures of people with herpes to get them not to have premarital sex. Good idea?

It depends on their ages. If they are old enough to have sex then they are old enough to see the consequences of unprotected sex...

Better them see a picture than see it up close, on themselves. I say as long as they are old enough, that may be a good idea. I agree with a previous person who said 11 or older is an acceptable age. Younger than that, it's just traumatizing. But you'd need to add to the lecture the importance of valuing yourself enough to wait, not just try to scare them.

this guy has the best intentions of his children, but perhaps not the best way to go about it. it is good that he actually addresses the issues with his children because many parents ignore the issue entirely. it is sad to say that many children are having sex way before the parents even think of talking to their children about the issue... let alone not even considering waiting till marriage! perhaps it would be better to explain in its entirety the issues at hand when a child/adult has premarital sex. it is also good to teach your children about protected sex as well because they are entitled to make their own decisions.

just make sure they have the information to make an educated decision.

education is better than ignorance when sex is at hand....

by the way, Cleveland, OH school district is planning on starting sex education at kindergarten/first grade age children because they have studied the epidemic of pregnancies among children & decided that was the age where it is about to become an issue.... SCARY... kids are starting to experiment sooner & sooner... scary!

It depends on the childs age, first of all. I think it is a good idea to be honest and open with your children about sex. STD's are real and they can ruin your life or even kill you, so if that is what it takes to keep them safe, I think it is ok.

depends on the kids' ages... If they're quite young and innocent, don't bother them or scare them from things that are not even an issue to worry about yet... They're not about to have sex for several years. Teens nowadays are starting to try sex, so maybe its good for them to know, learn through education, not to learn the hard way - catching it and getting stuck with it for the rest of their lives. Now, teens are often rebellious, they don't want to (or just won't) listen to advice, so I think pre-teen is the best age....when they're still receptive to advice and helpful information to protect themselves in the future. Education is better than learning the hard way, by catching it, and Education is better than dictating strict commands or nerdy draconion rules or morals,

While the idea is gross the idea of having the disease is even worse, my feeling show them and if you can get pictures if HIV,std , rape victims, use them kids need to be aware, it can and does happen to them and with some of those diseases there is no coming back, it is fatal, and what is worse having your child die or showing them pictures

i think this day and time it is a very good idea. i have two 8 yr. olds and a 10 yr.old all girls. i have put the fear in them. i have warned them about sex offenders and taught them that if anyone touches them in a way that doesnt feel right to tell me.i think that it is good to let them know the consiquences that may follow if they have premarital sex. keep up the good work.

I think its a good idea only if they are old enough to understand it or if they are at an age where they are about to become sexually active.
