Birds sit down because they find it as a way to protect and warm their eggs. Or their eggs can freeze and the baby bird inside may die.

They incubate them using a brood patch on their chest and belly's. As a bird gathers a clutch of eggs she will start to loose the feathers of her chest and when she incubates the skin is in contact with the eggs to keep them at body temperature. Male birds will occasionally sit eggs. We have a male golden eagle that incubated a rock for many months until he got very smelly and we had to take it off him. However males have no brood patch and tend to only sit the eggs to give the female a break to eat, preen and empty herself.

to keep them the proper temperature so they can develop and hatch.
That is why they use incubators to hatch eggs without having a mother bird sit on them for weeks at a time.

They do not sit down on the eggs...instead, they hover lightly above them. Their body temperature transfers to the eggs, keeping them warm unitl the babies hatch.

Good luck

they sit on the eggs to incubate them so they will hatch chicks!! They not ONLY sit on eggs to keep them warm, but they can also "shade" eggs as well, to keep them cool.
