Come on. I'm looking for some history of the term. What does the cutting refer to?

Thank you James L. It says it refers to cutting the anchor cable. Amazing how many people use that term and don't even know what it means.

"Cut and run" is an old naval term. When a ship was threatened by another vessel the captain would order the crew to cut the anchor loose rather than risk the time it takes to haul the anchor back aboard the ship.

That we would "cut" all physical ties with Iraq and run from Iraq leaving them to defend themselves without any help from us.

Which would in turn lead to mass slaughter of the Iraqis that want a democracy. That would include every man, woman and their children that even worked for us or helped us in any way.

The "cut" means to cut or stop your losses and then literally running or leaving.

It should be quite straight forward.

'Cut' means your quit or break a relationship.

'Run' means you physically remove yourself from the person/s you had the relationship with.

So if you cut and run from your partner, you frist break off the relationship and then physically leave them as well.

It's really not much of a mystery, is it.

Cut and run means give up and leave. Go home and wait for the terrorists to visit your neighborhood.

Cut your losses now and run or retreat to greener pastures. Usually in reference to being given a stupid order(in combat), attempting it, seeing it's impossibility , and cutting and running. Shoot idiot who gave order before leaving though. Saves future lives.
