My dog is a 3-month-old yorkie-poo. I've heard many people say they use their own shampoo on their dog. I'm thinking something generic and not too harsh.

I think so. Even baby shampoo will be okay.

You really should not use human products on dogs. They make special shampoo specifically for dogs. I think some human shampoos are too harsh for dogs and they can get skin irratations from it. Baby shampoo may be the safest, but I would still opt for something made for dogs. Someone mention Selsum Blue...this is actually an emergency remedy for a pet that is having an allergic reaction to Advantage or Frontline and you need to get it off them quickly, as it is pretty resistant to other shampoos. I would not use it on your dog on a regular basis, but only in a situation like mentioned above.

Human shampoo is designed to really get out everything and even 'generic non harsh' can be harsh on a dog.

Dog shampoo is designed to not dry out the skin. Dog shampoo also may come in formulas that better condition the coat.

Either way, wash once every one to two months and just keep him brushed and groomed well in between.

some kind of baby shampoo would work I guess. Back in the old days, my brother and I used Selsum Blue dandruff shampoo to bath our scented Ferrets and it worked pretty good but with all the ferret shampoos out on the market today, I have my favorites that I buy at Petco. mane and tail shampoo was only sold at feed stores and now ,you can get it in the super market. That works real well. good luck

Not a good idea to use human shampoo unless it's baby shampoo because it can cause irritatinos on the skin.

The only one I would even consider would be a diluted baby shampoo, but, it's in the best interest of your puppy to use something specifically made for his species. Anything else could irritate his/her skin. (Would you use dog shampoo on your 3 month old son or daughter?)

as long as it is not harsh you will be fine. I have washed mine in human shampoo because it smells better. Often people use the doggy kind because it has flea and tick repleants in it. Anyhow some human kinds will dry out there skin or irritate it so just be cautious of that and you will be fine. oh and rinse well.

If you use human shampoo, use baby shampoo. I've heard the Pert Plus is actually really good for removing fleas but have not personally tried it.

Yes! Baby Shampoo is fine but buy some Aloe Vera Gel to mix with it. It works as a good conditioner for their skin.

I wouldn't, too much perfume and it may dry out his skin. I guess you may get away with baby shampoo but why not just buy a dog shampoo.

I normally use dog shampoo, but occasionally I use my own shampoo and it has never hurt my dogs. And I always use human conditioner on them, I tried doggy conditioner and I did not like it.
But be careful, each dog is different and if yours is scratching or has a rash, discontinue use.
