Yes, your parakeet's beak can grow too long. How? An overgrown beak is a definite sign of a nutritional deficiency or a disease of the kidney and/or liver. It could also be a genetic fault.
Cuttlebone doesn't trim the beak, it sharpens it. Cuttlebone is ONLY a calcium supplement used for breeding birds or birds with a deficiency in calcium.
Gravel/grit is NOT recommended for any hookbill bird! This includes everything from parrotlets right up to macaws! Grit cannot be digested, it accumulates in the birds' crop (pouch for food at base of throat) and eventually the bird dies from the impaction.
Once you have an avian vet trim the beak, you will forever have to continue having it trimmed regularly, putting the bird under duress and anxiety due to the frequent trips to the vets office. Birds can keep their beaks from overgrowing simply by giving them things to chew. Wood blocks, fresh nuts and grains, sisal rope, coconut fibre, shreddables etc are all acceptable chewing items. Have a look in any avian pet shop and ask for these items. Good bird people will know what they all are. Best Wishes

Yes it can. The beak keeps growing, and the bird keeps wearing it down. It is a rare situation, and usually only happens when there is no cuttle bone or other substance for the bird available.

Make sure you provide your Parakeet with a Cuttle bone and a Mineral Block. The Cuttle bone is also a source of calcium and other minerals. Your Parakeet will enjoy pecking it and whetting his beaks on it.
Also have other gnawing toys available for your bird, that will keep his beak trimmed.
If his beak is too long, your Parakeet will not be able to eat anymore. If you have noticed a change in your Parakeets eating habit and are concerned, take him to an Avian Veterinarian.

Your pets should be seen by a vet anyway but think of what they would do in nature. they need a cuttle bone but that is for additional calcium supplement. Find a small rock too big to swallow not so big that intimidates the bird. The rock must be NON sedimentary igneous very hard if it is in fact too long most birds will work on it themselves. Give it a try before spending money that should be saved for a real emergency. Vet trips with a bird is an expensive ride. A bar may cause inconsistant features in the beak that will one day need attention. My Macaw, Amazon, love birds, Budgie all have a safe rock and they have even learned to clean it store it hide for themselves.

Yes they can, but if it isn't already too long it is very easy to keep the beak at the correct length. There is a treat-like thing called cuttlebone. The original cuttlebone is a white oval that attaches to the side of the cage, but what my parakeets like is the banana or grape flavored cuttlebone, which can be bought at any pet store and also attaches to the side of the cage.

Sure can!
It's important to keep sand in the base of a parakeet's cage and a little toy called a cuttlebone on the cage side. It's shaped like an oval and clips to the cage, and the parakeet chews on it, and it keeps her beak the right size.
Good luck!

Yes, it can. That's why you should give them cuddlebone.
If it's to long now it will interfear with your bird being able to eat.
If this is the problem, the vet can cut it for you.
