when i build a sub box for my 18" kicker and the manual says 3 cubic feet for the box, does that include the displacement of the sub going into the or not? thanks.

No it doesn't.
It would be a challenge to figure the volume of the speaker, then build the box so that you end up with exactly 3 cubic feet.
Try stuffing some polyfill quilt batting into the box, it will improve the sound.

I means the cubic air volume of the box itself. Each sub will need 3 feet. Thats one big box. to figure it out its width X height X depth if it is a wedge it would be width X height X (D1+D2)/2. dont forget to subtract the thickness of the wood for the box in your equasion.
