Do not use the liquid food coloring drops or your icing will get thinner and thinner as you add it and you'll never acheive a true color, which you may have already noticed. I like to use coloring gel. A little goes a long way. I use the Wilton brand and you can usually find it at WalMart, Michael's, or baking supply specialty shops. The color will dry about two shades darker when the icing sets if you're using meringue powder (which I would recommend to anyone) or eggs. So, when you're making the black, it will actually look a little greenish and then be black when when it sets up. And, the coloring gel doesn't thin the buttercream so you can keep it the right consistency for whatever your piping or icing.

You can buy those colors are either liquid, gel, or powder colorings at specialty stores (baking stores, try william-sonoma for example). You'll need a more concentrated coloring method too, so that the icing won't have a dye taste to it. Good Luck!

I know that there are stores that cater to professional bakers...they sell unique pans, cake decorating kits and food coloring that comes in small jars. The coloring is actually a paste in the jar, and the colors are intense. That would definately do the trick.
