My 14 y/old son is very easily startled. If a teacher calls on him in school , he jumps sky high. Even caling his name softly scares the fertilizer out of him. His mom and I are recently divorced, and she took off for upstate NY so he only sees her 4 times a year.
Any thoughts? Thanx

My son is on Effexor xr and ritalin. We're going to see his shrink in 2 weeks.

Sounds like he has anxiety issues. Anxiety is not fun. Infact, I would debate it's worse than depression. If he does have anxiety, it may be effecting him in more ways than just being startled that you don't see.

Also things like caffeine can really make a person more anxious, especially if they already have anxiety. So you may want to cut out any caffeine from his diet and see if that helps at all.

Sounds like paranoid schizophrenia. There is the fight or flight symptom or mostly the scared rabbit. Night terrors, panic attacks ,insomnia restless leg syndrome etc. The other possible explanation is that you or your wife might have dissociative identity disorder and don't remember being responsible. I would think he needs to be separated from his environment that is contributing to his anxiety and or paranoia. Diet can play a major role as well. Has he ever been checked for any possible toxins like molds? or parasites? There needs to be more information than you have given us here. To me this sounds like some traumatic event or a continuing threatening situation. Therapy should open some doors and windows. Separation anxiety from his mother etc. I remember having seizures when I was younger. Does he drink enough water?

people forget that there are side effects to drugs, and it sounds like he may be affected by the ritalin. It is a stimulant. My boy takes a med in the ritalin family, blinks alot and when it starts to wear off his head twitches.

Just curious... has he ever been screened for Asperger's Syndrome (a mild form of autism), depression, or anxiety disorders? I think a trip to the psychologist for some investigation will do him a world of good...

Seems like he has a few issues, maybe getting him a dog would help. I would suggest some psych help just so he has an opportunity to talk with someone.

I'm the most jumpy person you'd ever meet. You could be right in front of me and I see you're getting ready to make a loud noise and I'll still jump. lol I am ashamed. lol

does he have any other "anxiety" related symptoms ie: nail biting, nervousness, 'exessive' shyness(uncomfortable in public places)....read up on "Generalized Anxiety Disorders". It is treatable with medication. Just know lots of psychiatric disorders are physiological/ biological......ie: insulin disorders are call diabetes; neurotransmitter disorders are called panic disorder, anxiety disorder , even depression......
