Arabic is a very difficult language for native-speakers of English to learn if they have no background to start with. You need to ask yourself some important questions: 1. are you going to have opporunities to use Arabic as you would if you learned Spanish? 2. Is Arabic going to be relevant enough to you to spend all those hours upon hours of hard work? 3. Are you truly interested and motivated? These are questions only you can answer, but if you learned Spanish, you would no doubt have ample opportunity to use it all the time, even right here in the United States. Of course, there's no reason why you have to pick one or the other--but if you already have started learning Spanish, then I'd recommend sticking with it, first. At least work with it till you get to the point where you can read a magazine article in it, a newspaper article, or a simple novel with minimal help from a dictionary, and enough to be able to hold conversations about everyday topics.

Watch Univision or any Hispanic stations. This is how I learned Spanish. I like to watch the commercials. I also pick out one soap opera and try to keep up with it. When you get into the story, you will feel motivated to take a dictionary and look up the keywords. Soap operas last one hour, 5 days a week. I like to watch the ones at 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00 pm. Also the 6:00 Am show on Univision shows all kinds of musical videos. Despierta America from 7:00 to 10:00 AM is very good also.
I learned English and Spanish watching TV and using a distionary. I was born and raised in France.
Good luck to you.

There are many online, really good Spanish courses and you can go at your own pace. There's www. donquijote.org
there's Babelfish -it really isn't a bad translating tool - or, quite simply, if you just need to get by - get a Spanish speaking travel book and a good dictionary. The travel book will give you the useful stuff, like "Where's the nearest toilet?", and "How much is the hotel room?" etc., and a really good dictionary will give you the works. For example (por ejemplo) I was helping a friend communicate with some Mexican tenants last night, and man, their accent was something else! They were complaining that there were some kinds of bugs in the apartment, and even though the Mexican guy told me, I had to ask my friend to have him write it down. Simple! "Pulgas." (Fleas). Eso, no esta bueno!
So I plodded on, and because of my good dictionary I got "pulgas" and methods of how to get rid of them, etc. Spanish is really quite easy - you'll just fall into it.
If a guy's annoying you, just tell him you have 10 brothers and they're round the corner : "Animales! Mis hermanos ( son diez) se van aqui - no les veen? Ya! Por la esquina! Que se vayan, mierda!"
Never tell a Hispanic, though that he is "sin cojones," hahaha, LOL!
That's a big insult.
Don't worry, you'll be fine!

Just hang out with your PRIMOS (you kno what that means gurl) don't B by yourself, and bring along a spanish english dictionary that fits in ur purse. Just in case I mean you know a little spanish and that is good. Make sure you know
Habla poco espanol!- I speak a little spanish
Yo no se( yo no say)- I don't kno!
No comprende- i don't understand
*** No me gusta- i don't like (take off no if you want to say that you like it)
*** Te gusta? - Do you like?
hopefully you know colors.
usually in the front of the dictionary it gives you phrases. In Puerto Rico you pronounce your LL's & Y's like J's so you will say *Botella - Boteja*
U are going to have so much FUN!!
Boriqua! u know what that is 2 hopefully!
Ps translators are Gay and they make sence only slightly, pick ^^Decisisones^^ on Telemundo if u pic a novela on @ 10:00 tonight!
