Most states require all teachers to sign a type of "oath" in the beginning of every school year stating that they will treat every student with the same dignity and respect they would treat their own child and if they do not follow that oath it is grounds for termination. Now here in Wisconsin I know that it is very, very illegal for a teacher to do any such thing to a student and although I am not familiar with this corporal punishment policy I have a feeling that you could still rightfully raise hell. The fact is that everybody (especially children) make mistakes and while we need to be taught lessons so as not to grow up continually making mistakes public humiliation by your teacher is NOT going to get that message across. Call a meeting with the principal, teacher and possibly even the guidance counselor too. Before you go to the meeting print out information on how this type of situation might effect a child at this age and so on.

In most cases the solution is to ask the teacher politely but firmly without getting emotional - It serves two purposes the teacher will think twice before another incident and also your child will feel more confident because you asked on it's behalf - A little spanking won\t do much damage so don't blow your fuse and create a scene at school which can leave the teacher vindictive which will do more damage than good.

I didnt know they still had corpral punishment. I was spanked in school and usually deserved it. Im 36 now, so its been awhile. But if I recall, my parents said a parent could inform the school if they did or didnt want this done. Some parents can even request that they be called and informed of the situation before such punishment is doled out. Check with your school on the policy.

Well first of all, the fact that the teacher used a shoe is ILLEGAL. I'd seriously call the principal and the school board, the superintendant, etc, and raise one hell of a racket over it. How old is your son? That also is something to consider, if he's in elementary school then it is illegal as far as I know. I'd be damned if someone else laid their hand on my child, I might spank my kids, but I'm their parent, no one else has the right in my opinion.

my teen is in the 10th grade. we live in ohio. and here, if any teacher in any grade level spanked any child with any object, parents can call the police or the principal or the school superintendant and find out EXACTLY what happened about this. i would call on monday and get this out now and not wait.
i would not appreciate any of her teachers to spank for any reason. the school should have other measures in place for missing assignments. they do here in ohio.
for missed assignment or not turning an assignment in should not result in any kind of "spanking" from teacher or parents, it dont help solve the problem. talk to your child--dont scream--talk and ask why he couldnt do it, and maybe next time he will come and ask for help. the teacher was out of line..

No teacher should ever have the right to touch a child. This teacher did not act correctly. I don't even spank my children, no one else will either.

It IS against the law. No one can lay a hand on your child. My dad was a Principal. He said that they use to hit hands with rulers a long time ago. And now because of inappropriate touching (and kids stating that teachers touch them and it going to court) teachers cannot touch kids. I would talk to the Principal and even go higher up. Touching a student is a no no. (Even spanking their butt could be inappropriate touching)

Depending on what state you are in, it should be against the law for a teacher to spank, and spanking for not turning in an assignment is just dumb.

WITH A SHOE?! WTF?!
I can understand a spanking with the hand... but if someone spanked my child with a friggin shoe, I'd shove that shoe up their rear end and break their face in. That's horrible. I hope you get answers immediately and she is punished.
