I keep reading this from experts that say that bottled water absorbs some of the chemicals from the plastic bottle it comes in and that it's best just to drink tap water. To me, I just can't stand the taste of tap water. I taste the chlorine bleach they put in it, and who know how safe it really is. I really do love the taste of bottled water...Aquafina is my favorite.

Bottled water is much better than tap water. It is micro-filtered, then ozonated to kill bacteria. They add chemicals like calcium and other stuff to make it taste good. Distilled water is pure but taste like crap. I wouldn't worry about the water absorbing part of the plastic from the bottle. That might take years to happen. If you buy a bottle of water at the store it's probably been in existence less than a week.

Tap water is regulated by the EPA, and bottled water by the FDA.

The EPA has very stringent standards, and they are getting even tougher.

You should be able to know how safe your tap water is - the local water utility is required to issue an annual CCR (Consumer Confidence Report), which details the tests and results of your tap water.

If you can taste the chlorine, you could always have your tap water tested for chlorine levels. The miminum amount of chlorine for the distribution point entry is usually 0.2 mg/L and there usually needs to be a trace detectable at your tap.

Don't ever drink tap water. Some bottled water is no more than tap water. If it says spring water, you're probably better off. The chlorine isn't good for you, but the fluoride is even worse. You just have to look around to find clean water.

Hi there,
The safest alternative is to purify the water as it comes out of the tap.

Even if you have a purifier in the basement, things can go wrong in the piping between the device and your glass.

As far as cost per litre, you're looking at about 18-cents or less/litre in the first year. This drops to about 5-cents / litre each of the following years.

Compare this with the cost of bottled water of questionable source.....and who likes hauling bottles anyway?

It is not available over the counter. It is sold through private distribution.
