If so, why do Popes not marry (given that the first one was)?

Matthew 8:14-15 (King James Version)

14 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.

15And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.

Saint Peter, Pope Peter was definitely a married man. The RCC has never denied this. They also had married deacons and priests up until the start of the 2nd millennium, as does the Eastern Orthodox do today.

Peter's married status is one argument for married Potestant bishops, as with the Anglicans and Lutherans.

Yes, the Bible said Jesus cured Peter's mother-in-law. Therefore Peter was married. Many of the early popes were married.

A celibate clergy did not fully take hold until about 1000 A.D.

This idea of a celibate clergy came from the Jews, John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Apostle Paul.

The Jews. The Talmud argues that a person whose “soul is bound up with the Torah and is constantly occupied with it” may remain celibate (Maimonides, Laws of Marriage 15.3). For example, Yahweh ordered the prophet Jeremiah not to marry (Jeremiah 16:1-4). Moreover, the Essenes was a group that was active in Jesus’ time that practiced celibacy and thought by most scholars to be the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

WWJD? What would Jesus do? Jesus did not marry.

John the Baptist and Jesus are both believed to have been celibate for their entire lives. Some scholars believe that the example of the Essenes influenced either or both Jesus and John the Baptist in their celibacy.

The Apostle Paul is explicit about his celibacy (see 1 Cor. 7). There is also evidence in the gospel of Matthew for the practice of celibacy among at least some early Christians, in the famous passage about becoming “eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 19:12).

The concept took many twists and turns over the years and will probably take a few more before Christ returns in glory.

With love in Christ.

While Peter was in deed married (it's not something that we hide, it's right there in scripture), it is implied that they may have lived separate lives after he became a disciple. The requirement of not being married also carries over to the Bishops (who are the successors of the Apostles). There are no married Bishops. The main reasons can go back to Paul's exhortations. Practically speaking, a married man has divided efforts. Being a Pope or Bishop really is a full time commitment. Hope this helps.

Of course we know that Peter was married, it's in he Scriptures. What we do not know however is if he was Married during his public ministry. We know that he had a Mother-in-law, but it never mentions a wife, he could have been widowed. The popes don't marry because it is a law of the Latin Catholic Church that priests and Bishops cannot enter into Marriage once ordained.

They don't even realize that Peter wasn't a pope, or that the word pope isn't mentioned in the Bible, nor do they realize the importance of that scripture when Peter told men about salvation:Acts 2:38
Or that biships should be married 1Timothy 3:2

No Catholics do not recognize this. Ive actually never heard that anyone believed that he was married. Do you have evidence for this?

Yes and we also are aware that in the beginning of our Church history that priests could be married. We do still have married priests. If an Episcopallian priest who is married converts and becomes a Catholic Priest he remains married.

"But I want you to be without care.
He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord; how he may please the Lord.
But he who is married cares about the things of the world; how he may please his wife.
There is a difference between a wife and a virgin.
The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit.
But she who is married cares about the things of the world; how she may please her husband.
And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you,
but for what is proper,
and that you may serve the Lord without distraction."
1Corinthians 7:32-35

They believe Jesus wasn't married... so popes aren't supposed to be.

Of course, all the evidence to the fact that you poit was selectively eliminated to better fit their interests, in the basis that it wasn't written "with godly inspiration". That's how, acording to the ecumenical councils, god tells us about the "giants" "having it" with human females, but He says nay 'bout the giants (they are quite explained in the apocrifa)
