Depends on whether you're asking humans, or asking the question in an academic sense.
People will give you thousands, if not millions of answers to this question.
As far as nature, the planet, or the universe is concerned, the only obvious reason for the purpose of man (and all other life) on earth is to fill an ecological niche.
Personally, I think man's purpose is to return to wherever/whatever it is he came from.
You can interpret this answer however you like.

The understanding of God in the Old Testament was limited by the minds and understandings of the people of the time. I'd like to see us broaden the dialog about God, religion, and spirituality to be more inclusive than this one fixed idea. Whether one is a believer or not, the discourse can explore a broader spirituality than this same, stale discussion where people repeat the same tired ideas.

You were planned for God's pleasure.
The moment you were born into the world, God was there as an unseen witness, smiling at your birth. God did not need to create you, but he chose to create you for his own enjoyment. You exist for his benefit, his glory, his purpose, and his delight.
Bringing enjoyment to God, living for his pleasure, is the first purpose of your life. When you fully understand this truth, you will never again have a problem with feeling insignificant. It proves your worth. If you are that important to God, and he considers you valuable enough to keep with him for eternity, what greater significance could you have? You are a child of God, and you bring pleasure to God like nothing else he has ever created.
You will never grow a close relationship with God by just attending church once a week or even having a daily quiet time. Friendship with God is built by sharing all your life experiences with him.
Of course, it is important to establish the habit of a daily devotional time with God, but he wants more than an appointment in your schedule. He wants to be included in every activity, every conversation, every problem, and even every thought. You can carry on a continuous, open-ended conversation with him throughout your day, talking with him about whatever you are doing or thinking at that moment.

The real purpose of mankind is to fill the third of Heaven vacated by Satan and his demons. Our current job is to lead as many ppl to God as possible. There is only one path to God: Through Jesus Christ. Salvation is free, but it must be accepted to do you any good.Turn from your sin, and ask Him into your heart. The Holy Spirit will do the rest.

i believe we are to simply learn
