The only sign for sure, is that your water breaks. Or, if you've had contractions more than 4 times in an hour.
I've had all the other signs for a month now - my OB says I'll probably have my twins within 3 weeks or less. I've been nesting for months - but really, nesting is just cleaning house. Restlessness is either from stress, or because it hurts to carry babies. Pelvic pressure & braxton hicks, well I've had fake labor twice already, and will a couple more times. Loss of appetite - well if that was a sign of labor, well then women wouldn't get morning sickness early on! Back pains, this can start as early as the 2nd trimester too. All the signs, are usually for the last month or so. Some women even get these sooner, depending on their body, and the size of the baby/babies.
So, if your water has broken, or you have contractions more than 4 times in an hour, call your OB/hospital. And when in doubt, call too. They would rather see a mother who's having fake labor 10 times, then see a mother who waited too long to go in.

I just had my baby 4 weeks ago and I went both into early and false labor. Trust me false labor can feel a lot like the real thing. One way to know for sure is to drink lots of water, I mean lots. My nurse told me to drink at least a gallon of water a day. What happens is that if you get dehydrated it can worsen contractions even though your not fully ready.
Everyone is different but here is what happened to me:
restlessness
hip pain
tightening back muscles (It didn't hurt)
sharp contractions that disappeared quickly
contractions at regular cycles
slight bleeding when I went to the bathroom
If you are in labor make sure to put a towel on seat of the car just in case your water breaks on the way. Remember to always go to the hospital if you bleed.

I started nesting a MONTH before I had my baby.
I never went into labor..I had a csection, but my friend was dilated at 3 cm for 3 weeks before she had her baby...she had lost her mucus plug about 2 weeks before the baby came.
I am so sorry, but every pregnancy and every labor is different for each woman! You could hear 50 different scenarios, and they would probably all be different from yours.
I think this is one of the biggest worries of pregnant women, and their question is only answered......when the baby comes out!

Loss of mucous plug, bloody show, increase contractions, but that's about it. And please don't try any of the old wives tales to induce labor--they don't work and could endanger your baby.
