my friend woud like a leave for just 7 days from school because of a religious holiday but she cant have it because the ??? (dont know what she said, some book of rules for teachers or schools or something) doesn't allow it. what can she do? is there anything she can take for proof that says it is ok for a teacher to be given holiday if it is religious purposes? pls help.
PS she is an assistant for special needs children in primary school. all she is asking is 7 days? why is she not allowed? are there actually any rules to say this? if so, what rules do they comply with? thanks.

okay, so wouldnt u want a leave for xmas if u were in a foriegn country who didnt celebrate xmas? if YES then why cant she? fine! she can always quit, then they'll find it hard to replace her coz its hard to get someone who is bi lingual of 4 languages doing a great job at a school with disability children. it is hard work with those kids and imagine if that kid was yours and didnt have a specila teacher to help her learn? Try that ******* (to all who is being racist and abusive towards religions etc) and who said she is muslim? she could be anything for all you know. dont assume!

The reason teachers, assistants and other support staff are not allowed time off during term time is that they get alot of time off during the holidays. She may be able to get time off if she goes directly to the personnel section and asks for unpaid leave.

Our children are not allowed to take holidays in term time, so why should teachers be any different. Some kids suffer from not getting a holiday because of the price rise on holidays during school holidays. We should allow everyone two weeks holiday for whatever reason, as long as it is not exam time.

can she take the leave using her holiday entitlement? I see your point but this is a country where there are statutory holidays in certain festivals. If we let everyone choose their holidays based on their religions or beliefs it would be chaotic for the business world and the educational systems. Just imagine teaching a class of students who take leave at different time.

does it also mean that a buddist should take his/her holiday when it's budda's birthday, but come to work at xmas day???

mind you, countries like China does not celebrate xmas and they don't have xmas holidays. If you are an expatriate in China you have to take your own holidays for xmas if you want. They have other holidays that we don't have.

I'm regarded as a foreigner by many locals in this country, but I work to adhere myself to the systems here.

No way! Sorry love but in a Christian country she has the Christian holidays that everyone else has. If you were living in Iran do you think they'd give you time off for Easter........I think not

What the Dickens is bi-lingual of 4 languages? FYI bi means 2

when u work in a school environment u have 13 weeks holidays a year...these are your holidays that's the rules, if your friend wants to take a week off for religious reasons i suggest she takes unpaid leave ... ... am sure that there are plenty of other people in her position but most of them have to work as well!!
If she doesn't like it i suggest she finds a job where the holidays suit her needs.

why cant she take it as annual leave? I know that if you were the student you would be allowed to take it, but not sure about the teacher. I would say she should be able to, but she needs to read her staff handbook to find out where she stands

some school allows teachers to have a leave. there were four kinds of leave and mandatory, these are leave of absence, vacation leave and sick leave and maternity leave (if school shes working with implies these rules) maybe it will be better if she file a leave of absence or sick leave. pls know the rules of the said school and the by laws., if ever you know already the rules and by laws, knowledgeble of it, then why not try to apply for it.

Hang on; so she wants three weeks at Christmas (Christian holiday), three weeks at Easter (Christian holiday), plus another six weeks summer holiday, plus another two weeks (at least) half term holidays.............and she still wants ANOTHER week off, she is in the wrong job, maybe try unemployment; then she can have as many days off as she likes!

If it's in the contract, a binding document, and she signed it knowing this would represent a problem, she should be taken to court and sued for breach of contract.
There you go!
