I'm singing a song in a performance. Its a great song, sung by a female, so its within my range. The thing is that it switches from my lower range to my higher range (choir wise I'm a first soprano) in th emiddle of the song. The switch sounds -to me at least- bad, becuase I start out the verse sounding rough and rockish, and end in the higher notes, where my voice is very smooth and not typical of rock.

So... are there any ways to disguise the obvious swith between ranges? Any general suggestions on how to get a better sound? Thanks so much!

Don't be afraid to change keys or transpose the song to suit your voice. The instrumentalists can adjust more easily than the singer. Try transposing the high part down a third, or perhaps the whole song.

You probably are singing your lower range in your chest voice. If you were in choir, you should of learned the difference between your chest voice and your head voice. If there is an obvious change, you are unable to push your chest voice up to a certain note/range and it is switching to your head voice as soon as you get higher. I would suggest you maybe lighten up on the lower end of your range so the switch is not so obvious....but as you said, that is not the typical rock genre.

You're going to have to lighten up on the first part and bring your voice out of your chest a bit so that when you have to switch to head voice for the high notes it doesn't sound as different. Keep working on it and practice the specific parts of the piece where you switch from chest to head (you'll know 'cause it'll feel different). Work on making a smooth transition so that it doesn't feel so different.
