Adult strays are very hard to catch. If you have the time, you should try leaving food out for it, and sitting nearby (maybe fifteen feet or so away). Eventually, it will be comfortable enough with your presence that you can try to approach it (but don't move too quickly or get any closer if it is obviously uncomfortable).
If you don't have that much time, you could call the local animal control and see if they can catch the cat and then let you keep it or adopt it from your local shelter. Remember, since it might be feral, you'll have to get it spayed or neutered and give it all of its shots if you want to keep it.
Good luck!

You can check with your local Rental Center or Feed Store-and rent a "Have A Heart Trap", Set the trap out with something like tuna, mackrel or sardine cat food. It may take a few attempts and several types of food before you can catch it. Note: PLEASE PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION WHEN TRYING TO HANDLE THIS STRAY OR ANY OTHERS, AS RABIES IS A HUGE ISSUE!!!!! for both bites and scratches.
You should consider calling Animal Control to handle the cat as they are trained in doing this and are usually vaccinated for Rabies as well.

Stray cats often become ferral and may not be safe to catch. If, it is friendly and will approach you, then you need to gain it's trust before trying to handle it. But, if it is unfriendly and is a nuisance, then, you should call your local SPCA for help.

there are humane traps out there, but PLEASE don't hurt the kitty after you trap it, take it to an adoption home instead of the pound! Or keep them for yourself, it could end up being a very nice kitty! I have done that with a couple strays, and they turned out okay!

Be careful, my friend just did that and got bit. The cat ran off and they couldn't find it, so she had to go through the entire rabies vaccination.
I would call animal control and let them deal with the cat.
