My parents like to sit around and talk constantly. They shy away from any activity and act like all they want to do is talk talk talk and eat eat eat. They are visiting me this weekend, and I'm already going nuts. If I take them to the movies, they talk through the movie and make it so no-one can hear anything...My dad is really loud and overbearing and always makes a scene when we go to a restaurant. Last night, my Mom asked our waitress how her husband died! How can I deal with things like this? I will see them in a half-hour. They also have their crazy little poodle with them! I love them so much, but it's really hard to be around them.

Since you no longer live with them, they probably miss you a lot! So sit and talk and talk and talk! It's only one weekend out of your life, you can do that much for all they've done for you.

How did your mom know the waitress's husband was dead? Did the waitress tell her? If so, it may have been embarrassing to you, but the waitress is used to hearing that.

If your dad is loud in a restaurant, you are not responsible for his behavior.

Just try to enjoy your time with them. They will be gone again soon.

Did you try some more outdoorsy type activities with your parents? Concerts in the park, taking a Digital Camera and walking on the nature trail (and they can talk, stop, sit, talk, take photos, etc on the way while gaining some exercise), Bowling, Taking your Mom shopping (and letting your dad watch his SPORTS channels), anything around town -- little festivals, displays, whatever -- even a museum with hands-on activities or other things --

all these are fun activities where they can be a little louder and still have fun, and you can relax knowing that they won't be driving others nuts.
