Because the Blu-Ray Disc technology
currently allows for a higher resolution
(i.e. 1080p as opposed to 1080i for HD DVD).

Both have the same picture quality but Blu ray can hold more capacity. Important for archiving stuff from you computer or if your someone that likes to watch all that extra stuff they put on DVDs. Bluray really just give you more space for extras. But the blu ray costs more. That was the big argument. Bluray is very expensive to produce and requires factories that produce the discs to be completly retooled. HDDVD doesn't need all that, the conversion is relatively cheap and fast.

Right now the big difference comes from the players. Bluray Players costs about twice as much as HDDVD. Discs cost more too. The players are all buggy too. Toshiba released the first HDDVD and it had a really beautiful picture but the unit was buggy. You knew there were going to be issues when the explaind in the manual how to reset the machine. They have since upgraded the units and are now planning on bringing out a 1080P machine.

You see the machine does the 1080p not the disc. The blu ray players just have a scaler that makes the output 1080p. But if you have a 1080p TV than your TV will automatically up it to 1080p.

There is alot of talk about sony and toshiba putting there differences aside and making 1 format. time will tell but it makes sense. I haven't got one yet and I'am waiting.

Swan is really in touch with the industry so check out his prediction.

I would expect the DVD war to go to hd-dvd. It is like the vhs war with betamax, which was the Sony system. Blu-ray is also a Sony system, and it is too proprietary for other companies to take advantage of.

I would hold off on the high def DVDs for a while. It doesn't matter who is better.

As far as picture quality is concerned they are equal. same goes for
sound quality. Right now HD-DVD players are less expensive, but Blu-ray offers more releases as more studios are releasing movies on blu-ray. I am waiting to see who comes out on top, and for prices to fall. If you want your DVD's to fill the screen consider a DVD player that converts regular DVD's to HDTV. They are much less expensive, and can hold you over until the battle is finished.

Right now HD-DVD has better picture quality, but there is no inherent reason they both should not be the same. Both formats have sufficient capacity for 1080p HD images, and both are going to provide them. For some reason, BluRay is having encoding problems on their discs. See

There are some reports that the newer BluRay discs are getting better.

Blue-Ray is the superior technology but unfortunately it has the disorganized backing of Sony. That alone is enough to make it fail.

Sony is notoriously mismanaged and stingy with their source code making it difficult for 3rd party developers to utilize their technology.

I hope Blue ray wins the next gen dvd race, but having Sony on its side is not a good thing.

On the bright side, I think there is rumor of some next gen dvd players being developed that will play both formats. (Imagine how expensive those will be.)

It's not going to matter. Beta always had a better picture than VHS and the tapes were smaller. I almost bought one but the salesman talked me out of it. Good thing I listened b/c less than a year later, there were no Beta tapes to be found. Sony took a beating on that. better luck to them this time.

Holds more information. Off the top of my head, BluRay is about 56 gigabytes, HdDVD is about 42... Less storage means less info on the disk, ergo less detail in a picture.

Unlike Betamax, Sony might win this format war.

Yes. It hold more information. It is protected by a special scratch resistance film. It is backed by more companies. It offers both rewritable and non-rewritable discs. It is better. Go look up specs and compare. I would wait a while before i got either or regardless.
