We had an accident and dropped a crystal decanter full of scotch, the top of the crystal lid/plug broke off and the stem is still in the neck of the decanter and is stuck very tight. We have tried gluing a wire to the top of the broken end and have tried a suction cup but nothing works. HELP! We need to rescue the scotch and let it out!!!

hold it upside down under hot water. the top of the decanter will expand and the stopper will fall out.

If the hot water ideas above don't work, and I have my reservations about that...the heat required to make the crystal expand, if the decanter is thick, could have a detrimental effect on the flavour of the scotch, there are some other ideas you can try.

Depending on how much glass remains of the stopper (?) you can take a large very firm potato, as unripe as you can find at the supermarket, cut it in half and press it down over the broken ends of the glass and carefully turn it until it loosens enough to pull it out. (This also works with light bulbs that have broken while in the socket).

Barring that, you may want to get a cheap glass cutter (amazon has one for 2.50) and cut the decanter just below the stopper to get the scotch out. It'll take some effort and patience but it can be done.

If you want to save the decanter, you might consider drilling two small holes in the bottom, one for air to go in, and one for the scotch to come out. once you've emptied it, you may be able to have a glass blower or glazier repair the bottom.

A last resort is to just break the thing into pieces into a large bowl and run the scotch through a coffee filter to get out any tiny glass fragments.

Hi there,
I am worried more about the decanter than the scotch inside, specially if it is real crystal.
If it is, put very few drops (but relly very few like one or two max) of WD40 in the rim around the stem. Dont let the WD40 spill out of the rim. glue the top of the stem with cement glue to the original lid part (if not broken. Let it pass the night, and then try to reopen.

This is the best way. Try it before risking your decanter!

Take a wooden spoon, and using the handle tap not too hard, on each side of the bottle at an upward angle of 5:00 and 7:00. Repeat a few times if it doesn t work the first time.

I ve used this technique several times, and it works a treat. Sorry the advice is 10 years late.

Usually hot or cold applications should shrink/expand the bottle or cork. Try soaking a cloth in hot water wrap around the joint to see if that works otherwise the opposite use a cold cloth. The cloth also acts as an aide in turning the cork from the bottle. Enjoy the Scotch!!!

cold water may help shrink the stem, so you be able to remove it.
