I belive they get paid by the heads they come back in with in their baskets. Same is true for other food crops.
I have heard from somewhat reputable sources that the pickers get a much higher wage than $5 an hour. They get paid quite well and I'm curious to know if anyone out there REALLY knows what they make.

So far with 4 answers ...ignorance is bliss.
Keep guessing. When I post the info I have you will be amazed and realize what a load of crap we are being handed by our government and those that would have us believe they get paid very litle.
Hint: Everything is relative.

Notice how nobody really knows the answer to this.
The fact of the matter is, workers are paid by the piece. What they collect or pick/field process is how they are paid. This approach keeps them hussling and working fast.
$10 an hour as an hourly wage is very low. Few, even Mexicans would work for that in the fields. Most make anywhere from $15 to $25 and hour. Frequently they get perks too. Baby sitting sevice, rides to the field, health care on a bare bones basis if they hurt themselves. The companies throw picknicks for them and basicly treat them like kings.
Don't kid yourself about what they earn. They DO work hard and I take nothing away from them but I have to wonder ...if I could measure up and work well enough to earn $25 an hour with a few perks, would I do that kind of work? I think younger Americans would.
The reason the growers us illegals as pickers is that they don't have to pay workman's comp. Workers' comp drives the wage level beyond what makes sense.

Well, that's kind of the gag...present yourself as poor and humble and needy, and make 4k/month cold hard cash...PLUS the govt. goodies...

They get about $10/hr. Their paychecks show $5/hr the other $5 is paid in cash so when they go to the welfare ofc. and show that small wage they can qualify for welfare, food stamps and Medicaid. In this way they make more than many American citizens. Then they send money home every month by living 20 to a house. The money sent out of our country is lost revenue for the U.S.A. Americans will work those jobs for a decent wage which keeps them off the welfare rolls and puts money in their pockets that will be spent in this country, going back into our economy, helping the U.S., not draining it and citizens pay taxes on their wages with THEIR own ID's.

Many of the jobs illegals do could be done by automation. Producers don't go to automation because it's easier to hire an illegal at low wages. By replacing the illegals with automation and U.S. citizens, the U.S. would save by not supplementing their wages through fed. tax funded programs.

In Georgia, they make $8.37/hr., guaranteed, more depending on how much they pick. (piece rate) http://www.dol.state.ga.us/Access/Service/JobsDetail?CGIAREA=000001407687010
They don't hire illegals in the state of GA.

The average wage for skilled and unskilled farm workers is about $10 an hour, said Austin Perez, a labor specialist with the federation.

You can find that on the web.

More than $5 dollars an hour! holly crap, that is why all this white, black and asian people are getting in line competing to get a job as a lettuce picker! Now I get it!

Seriously, that is why you need illegal immigrants, to do this kind of jobs and get you to complain less about how expensive vegetables are.

By the way, I saw a crew of WHITE people doing yard work at a local bussines park, boy did I think the end of the world was near....

It's something like $9 - 10 an hour - a lot more than many American wage earners make.

Agricultural workers are paid less than minimum wage. They live in housing supplied by the farmer and shop on credit from the farmer. It is a plan designed so they never get out of debt. They cannot complain because they are here illegally. This is why lettuce costs only 93 cents per head.

I don't eat lettuce or spinach or drink carrot juice since the e-coli out breaks

If I want them I will grow my own!

What ever the cost is it's too expensive for the American public to pay at the expense of their health!

If they get $10 hour that is great, how many americans would do such back-breaking labour in the hot sun for any less? That works takes stamina and cannot be very enjoyable. The pickers deserve thier wages.
