Seances are a form of communication between the living and the dead. Usually a group of two or more people, known as "sitters" sit at any sized table in a quiet room with the help of a clairvoyant person known as a medium. Mediums are people who can understand the dead by hearing them and expressing to the living what is being said to them. Sometimes, mediums can only communicate through writing, (this depends on the medium's capabilities), this type of writing is called automatic writing, where a spirit will use the medium's energy to just start writing. This type of communication differs from direct writing.

Mediums will express to the living through written messages or verbal messages what is being told to them by the deceased. In earlier times, between late 1800 and early 1900, mediums were assisted by trumpets made of copper to help the audio of the dead be heard. Other instruments of beneficial use were bells, twigs, and even children's toys. Those have since been done away with though through the years. Mediums are different from clairvoyants and psychics and should not be confused.

I"ve never been to a Seance, but I have done the Weegy board. It was 36 years ago and I have never done it since and never will. I did it with 2 strangers and one very casual acquaintance. The answers given were mind blowing, and were only known by me. I believe that there was the presence of a spirit in that room. It was really scary

The confidence trickster (or medium) pretends to be contacting dead people...the gullible take it in.

The con man may wave a trumpet about under cover of darkness or ring a bell or perform some kind of illusion or trick to convince the gullible that it's the 'dead people' doing it.

seances are rarely used now .. its very old
as modern spiritualists do not believe in trying to summon those who have passed on
which is what is attempted at seances
but
it usually consists of a few people around a table , linking with hands and opening to the spirit world , with a medium present
they would have used tools such as boards etc to communicate
( again i find this untrustworthy )
but people still do it , although it is rare
now days people would sit in development groups and wait for spirit , rather than calling spirit

seance is a gathering of people to contact the spirit world. people sit in a circle&hold hands,then someone asks to speak to a departed soul. you need to close you eyes&consentrate& wait for a sign. i have tried it but nothing happened,maybe it wasn't the right time as you need to be sincere.
