Assuming you go to a reputable piercer and use good aftercare habits, after a year when you take it out it should heal completely (also making sure you keep the open hole clean while its healing) after 3-6 month average. The scar SHOULD not be overly visible, at first it will just appear to be a VERY small whitish dot. Though time will fade this scar to nothing. Again, assuming the piercing healed correctly and was done correctly you'll be fine.
However, if you pierce with a large gauge than a standard 14g, you'll have a larger scar and your skin elasticity might be weakened by that.
If you need more info lemme know. I'm hoping we are talking about the lip on your face, if its the one below the belt, message me because thats a bit of a different ballpark.

If the person who pierces your lip is a professional then it will heal up and the scar will be so minimal you won't really be able to see it.
But if the person is new at it or does not know what they are doing you could have problems with infection, too big of a hole, ext.... Before jumping into getting your lip pierced check out the establishment and the person doing the piercing. It is OK to ask for references people they have pierced in the past. You can never be to cautious when it comes to your body and the marks a botch job can leave behind. Also you can the better business bearue to make sure there are no complaints against the establishment. I have y tongue pierced and checked out the establishment before I did. I am glad I did because the first place i checked out had a pending lawsuit for a very bad ***** o. So do not be afraid to investigate the establishment.
Good luck and Happy piercing...

RE:
what sort of a mark will a lip piercing leave?
I want to get my lip pierced - the side of my bottom lip, but I had a couple of questions. Say I wore the piercing for like a year and then take it out:
will the hole ever heal up again?
if yes, will the scar be noticeable?
if not, will the hole be noticeable?
many thanks!

It all depends on your skin and what all you put in the pierceing if it is heavy or big things .. some people do this and then stop and it does not ever heal up and looks bad or like a small dot .. others just put some things and then stop and it may leave a small dot ot may over time 5 to 10 years go away ( Depends on how your skin reacts to it all... good luck you may also try useing lotion etc that help the skin to grow and be healthy

You should go to a professional piercer and get their opinion, too, since alot of the answers I just read through are complete lies.
I had my lip pierced and had to take it out because it was placed poorly - never let an apprentice pierce you unless you are prepared to deal with this possibility. I was! It was in for about three months, and was just about fully healed. Now, it has been out for two months, and I have a very small, tiny, barely noticable dimple where it once was. I also developed a keloid on the inside of my lip, just irritated scar tissue, which will go away in time.
From what my piercer has told me, even if you left a lip/tongue/cheek piercing in for a very, very long time and let it heal completely, the hole will totally, completely close up in time. UNLESS you stretch it to much larger size jewelry (think a 6g or larger) you should be fine. BUT I STRESS - TALK TO A PROFESSIONAL! You get good ideas SOMETIMES here, but for a serious question like that, you need the right answer. Good luck and enjoy your piercing!

I had the corner of my upper lip pierced for about a year. I now have an indentation everytime i smile.. so i just look miserable all the time!
no seriously, it left the indentation, which some people think is a dimple.... there is no visable scar. The indentation i think only occurred because I kept playing with the piercing from the inside with my teeth.
So, If you decide to go ahead with it - resist chewing it from the inside!

My friend pierced his lip, then he let it heal for a while (then he pierce it agian), but it just scabbed over which wasn't very noticable... I don't don't think it scars, and if it does it probably wouldn't be very bad or noticable.

Yes it wil heal.
The scar is barely noticeable and probably will go away after a small period of time. If you take it out and it is only shortly after you ahve gotten it the hole will probably close up within minutes or hours. The scar will look a lot like little acne scars. Hope that helps.

Yes it is. I had the same problem but once you can change the ring it won't happen anymore, because the one they give you at first is bigger so it has room for swelling.
