First, you do need a crate. Second, and this may sound strange, but it really works. Get a small bell. The crate is for when your not home or sleeping. The dog will get use to it, and it will be his own personal space that he'll grow to love. Make sure the crate is just big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in. Any larger and he will mess in it.
The bell is to hang on your inside door knob of your door to the outside. Everytime you take the dog out, ring the bell. Hang it low enough so he can reach it with his nose. Before you know it, he will ring that bell every time he has to go, and let you know it's potty time!! It can become a game of outside play to him, so only ring the bell at potty time. NOT PLAY TIME!! Take him to the same spot outside to go. When he goes, praise him and take him right back in. Don't use the crate as punishment when he has an accident in the house. DO NOT USE PAPER!!! Your teaching your dog to go in the house when you paper train them. It confuses them. It's like "hey, you said it's ok to go on the paper, so whats the difference if I go on the carpet." I've had so many clients tell me how great the bell worked. Even my own father trained his springer (after 3 months of going in the house) with the bell. Within a week she was asking to go out all on her own. Good luck to you.

crate train if you havea to leave for a period of time during the day. As far as the training, your puppy will have to go out every half hour to 45 mins. and every time after he plays or takes a nap. When you see him sniffing around grab him take him to where you would like him to do his buisness and say something like go potty or go bathroom do this every time and he will soon be trained ( of course there will be the occasional accident) if he does use the bathroom in the house scold him with a firm no bad puppy and take him to where he is supposed to go and praise him when he does it in the right spot. Hope I helped.

This is going to sound odd, but it will be different for males than females. A lab is a big dog and they have accidents longer than little breeds (ask your vet). I trained mine (females) to paper, moving it closer to the door I have their lead on daily. When we got a wet paper, I took them immediately out and put them on the lead. The idea is to make it before they have an accident and praise every time, so every couple of hours (like a baby) it's a good idea to take them outside. Enjoy your pup!

Important Dog Training Trick
A rolled-up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled up newspaper if your dog chews something or has a housebreaking accident. Take the rolled up newspaper and hit yourself over and over again on the head and repeat to yourself the phrase "I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG" ... " I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG"... If your dog laughs at you when you do this, praise him.

constant repetition of taking it out after each meal and before bed ..dogs are smart ..it should not take to long before he gets the idea

ok this is simple. if hes small buy a playpen at a salvation army store and put paper in the bottom of it .put some outside later and put him on it after he eats. if hes bigger than use a kennel. never hit him . or rub his nose in it . walk him where there are lots of dogs he will pee alot there. get him use to going out and he will ask to go out. my lab died at 14 this is how i got him to use it outside
