We got the first tickle me elmo for my daughter, she was probably 2-3 back then. We parents thought it was real cute. She was scared to death of it. She would start screaming if she saw it and would not enter a room that Elmo was in.
My sister-in-law stood in a line for hours to get that thing, and I hope who ever picked it up at salvation army got better use of it then we did.

I have to agree... of course, I am a penny-pincher, so I may not be the best person to ask! I can't see spending even the retail amount for a TMX Elmo (even though he is my 2 year-old's favorite character), let alone paying such a ridiculous price for one! If my child wanted one that bad- she'd have to wait for him to go on sale in a year, when all the hoopla has died down and the stores are packed with Elmos that have missed the Christmas season. I can't see spending hard-earned money on something that will be back to a reasonable price as soon as the supply catches up with the demand. Besides, children today have no idea of the value of a dollar, and are used to having everything handed to them when they barely mention that they want something. Why not teach them to delay gratification and not expect to receive something unattainable? I'm sorry, but if my child said they had to have something that was ridiculously priced, I'd say "then save your allowance if that is really what you want." I want my children to know that toys don't just fall from the sky at their whim, and as much as I love them, I won't just get them stuff because they want it. I never understand the parents who stand in line at 2 in the morning to get the latest "gotta have-it" toy... I want my children to remember much more about Christmas time than getting stuff. I guess for me, it just isn't a priority or necessity to buy the "in" toy right during it's peak of popularity (and price!)

Heck no. The hysteria that surrounds these toys is just naive consumers playing right into the hands of retailers. Why does everyone want one? Because they are TOLD that it is the next big thing. Do you really want one or do you just want what you think everyone else already has? Do you want one because the media tells you that is what you want?
You are so right. The prices are absolutely a rip off. But the retailers know that creating mass hysteria for these things will cause people to pay for them. It is just stupid and if people would think for themselves then they wouldn't be after them the way they are.
If you really, really want one then just wait for the hysteria to die down. They'll still be around and you'll get one for next to nothing. I've never seen a popular toy that doesn't eventually end up in the bargain bin.

I wouldn't pay $40 for one and I have three little ones. One thing that I've learned over the last 6 years is that 99% of the toys out there are going to be played with for a total of 10 minutes and then they're collecting dust or cluttering up my playroom. It's not even that entertaining or cute. The people that are paying $100- $150 need to look around and see all the people that don't have food to eat or a place to call home before they drop money on such a piece of junk.

I completely agree! I like Elmo on Sesame Street etc. but I think the Tickle Me Elmo and TMX Elmo are obnoxious and I wonder how many parents will take the batteries out buy Christmas night.

OMG they did it again! this is a way of the manufacturer to rip us off! it is a great big scam that for some reason people fall for! I was working at k-mart 10 years ago at xmas time when the tickle me elmo was "the thing to have" I actually witnessed 2 moms fighting over the last one! great example for the children huh? my daughter was a year old at the time and just out of curiosty a few months after xmas when it was back on the shelfs at normal prices i bought her one. she didnt even like it. it sat in her toy box for ages i think we ended up giving it to the goodwill! LOL!

As a mother of 5 gifted & talented children - we never had Elmo in our house. I would rather pay the money toward college tuitions, than on a toy that the dog will chew up in 5 minutes or less.

Wait awhile until the madness dies down. It's really silly, just like when Tickle Me Elmo came out and people were fighting over it and buying them up to sell for higher costs. It's not all that important to have one right away, if ever. After the silliness goes away there will probably be plenty of them available.

It's all just hype created by the toy manufacturers and retailers to drive up customer demand. Wait until after the holidays and you'll find them at regular price.

Not I. Today's "must-have" toy is tomorrow's clearance item. Remember Cabbage Patch Kids? Fuby? Tamagotchi? TMX is the next in line.
