Volunteer at an animal shelter or donate cash to one. Also shelters can always use old towels/blankets et cetera. Find out what your shelter needs and see if you can start a donation collection.

Lots of good answers :) You can start by calling to animal shelters and seeing if they need volunteers. (trust me..they will) Make sure you go to a shelter you believe in, some have some ideals you may not agree with. (eg no kill shelter vs one that does euthanize)
Other ways include having a yard sale and donating proceeds to the shelter, checking wish lists for shelters and giving that way. Some place take things like Canadian Tire money as well as actual cash to get things.
You can walk dogs or cat sit for people at their homes...again giving proceeds to shelters. (or even just helping the animals themselves by having a good walk)
You could also see if local old folks homes would allow you to bring in a dog or cat for "visits". There are many studies showing that the elderly enjoy and benefit from pet visits. (sometimes this is done thru a local shelter)

What you should do is explain to whoever you are living with that the cats or kittens are just temporary. Then set up a living area in your bedroom for any strays that you find. Make posters and then contact your local shelter or animal league. I found some information at the site below. Take a look.

BLESS YOU!!!! I do animal rescue as well. Until you get a place of your own or your own house here are some ways to help without having them in your home.
1. Volunteer at your local animal control or humane society. You can take the poor doggies out of the cages and take them for walks and make them feel like the most special things in the world.
2. Look on petfinder.com for local foster organizations and email them to help with adoption days at local pet stores. You could help transport to the site and help people that are wanting to adopt them.
3. You can do fundraisers to help raise money for the no-kill shelters and donate the funds to help those innocent little babies.
Hope this helps, you are a wonderful person and I wish we had more people like you in this world.!

Go to an adoption center, or petsmart, or something they're always looking for help, or kennels or boarding places! I used to volunteer at a cat shelter, and it sucked cleaning cages, but I LOVED being around all the animals!

You can gain some money and help an animal shelter. Or , every time you see an abandoned dog or cat, try to take him to an animal shelter, where he can get better and someone can adopt it. Good luck!

the best thing you can do is catch them and take them to your local SPCA or humane society so they can be returned to owners who have lost them.. many may be tatooed or microchipped some have probably been stollen from their homes by neighbours then dumped in your area so somebody is probably looking for them.. the real "homeless" ones should be taken off the streets and either humanely euthanized (better than dying of starvation or worms or disease on the streets) or adopted out
best thing to do is encourage people to SPAY Or NEUTER and discourage idiots who give away free kittens.. support your local SPCA or Humane Society - volunter or donate $

Contibute to your local humane society. Many shelters have 'wish lists' available at the front desk, these are things they need donated, towels, food, litter, bleach, toys etc... if you want to do more than just give money.
Many rescue's need volunteers to help socialize, and care for animals, if you have spare time, you can volunteer at a rescue (It's hard not to want to take them all home! I do foster care and I cry when my babies get a new home, everytime!)

You just took the first step. Go to your local shelter or humane society. Volunteer time, animal care or food. They will love you (the animals will too!) Good for you!
