Control Panel>Power Options is used to turn off a computer after it has been idle for a set amount of time.

Obviously, you can't just hookup a $15 electrical timer to your computer and cut the power at a certain time - you'll trash your computer if it is not shut down properly.

The Macintosh has this option built into it - unfortunately, Microsoft never did this in their O.S. You're going to have to use a piece of software to do this. You can look at many different software packages that do this. I've listed a few below:

You can set your computer to turn off when idle for a set amount of time. So you don't need a timer.

Right click on your desktop and go into your settings. Click on the screen saver tab and from there, click on the power button in the "Monitor Power" section. From there you should be able to set your computer to either shut down, hibernate, shut the monitor only or the hard drives after a certain period of time without use. Of course you have to remember that this will be it's command for any time you are away from it for that period of time, not just at night.
